30,000 mile service costs $1,100???

Lol I mean..... There *is* a procedure for it.

Now, measuring side to side imbalance, that's a thing. Rare..... But still a thing.

 

I doubt if I've spent $1100 on basic service since buying my truck 15 years ago. I'm approaching 230,000 miles. Maybe $500 total for all of the oil changes. Do as much as you can yourself and find an independent mechanic for the things you can't.

I have replaced the plugs and serpentine belt twice as well as several sets of brakes on the front. I've only done the rear brakes once. Shocks/struts have been replaced once. But I don't consider that service. That is replacing worn out parts.

 

It's more about the tiny filter Toyota uses that limit oil change intervals. My Ford (3.5 V-6) had a filter twice the size of the one on my Toyota and I did the 10K oil changes with no issues. Wish they could have used a bigger filter element.

 

Brake and PS fluid flush?? is that a real thing?

Not once have I done this on purpose... 2005 Altima with 217K before it was sold, still daily driving 2004 CRV with 248K and not my 08 Sentra with 120K...

brake pads when they're needed, oil changes as needed, engine mounts as needed, suspension components when needed, but not once have I touched the BF, PSF or ATF.

 

I'm well aware...but when is the last time you've seen or heard of someone actually doing it. Excluding race applications.

My point is no way in hell that is actually getting done & is just pure "fluff" to make the bill fatter.

 

Who did the brake pads? If a shop did it, odds are really high they at least partially refreshed your brake fluid when they bled the brake lines. If not, then they are incompetent.

 

uhhh. i feel like an idiot then. i did that and it was around that price. my notes say
"Tire rotation, oil + filter change, brake adjust, driveline fluids, brake fluid, power steering, fuel injection, f/r align suspension"

i was in a minor hit and run 2 weeks before hand so i was ready to pay whatever for peace of mind....

i also dont have the tools for this stuff and thought most was covered, but welp im an idiot

 

Actually I'm on my third car this week that's come in with pretty warped rotors that have needed some serious resurfacing. It's mostly Karen's who wait to their brakes are down to 2 mm and drive hard.

Diffs and PS are literally easier to do than engine oil. Even a dumdum like me can do it by myself.

My transmission is due on my next round. I am not looking forward to that.

Unless your doing some heavy towing no dif, trans service due yet. You don’t need to flush the brake fluid or power steering fluid yet way to early.This service writer is trying to up his numbers on your expense.

I think most are saying don't pay a dealership to do it that early. It's usually not necessary, now. If you tow or off-road a lot then it's not a bad idea.

 

A good friend of mine has a 2017 Mercedes GL450 that he bought used as a Certified Preowned in 2019, with like 9,000 miles on it. He drives a lot for work, and he presently has 120K miles on it. He lives out of state, but comes to Pennsylvania (where I live) often enough that he uses my mechanic. My mechanic originally worked as a technician at a Volvo dealership, but is certified to work on Mercedes because they got a lot of those on trade and a lot of Volvo owners also own Benzes. Anyway, he opened up his own shop a few years ago because, among other things, the borderline larceny taking place at the dealership disgusted him. So earlier this year, my friend brought in his SUV for the Mercedes 100K-mile service. My mechanic, Pete, takes a look at it and ends up charging him like $126 for all that needed to be done. The thing with the Mercedes dealership is that they change fluids and replace parts at certain increments whether they need to be replaced or not (as recommended by the manufacturer, not required). Pete carefully went over my friend's SUV and determined that it needed an oil change and some other fluid to be replaced. Anything recommended by the manufacturer or the dealer is a farce in my opinion.

 

Once the warranty is up, there's no need to pay dealership prices for service or repairs.

 

Well definitely. I wasn't planning on returning after this service. Just wanted to see if anyone had heard that the 30k service is $1100? FWIW, the idiot lube tech forgot to reinstall one of my skid plate bolts, so its banging around down there now. I'm annoyed to say the least

 

Going to go ahead and disagree with this. Dealerships have access to much better software and service tools than your average garage.

For regular wear and tear service yeah go anywhere. But for specific repairs your dealership's actually a better option

 

There’s no way that any fluids outside of motor oil need touched at 30k. Not unless you are driving in extremely stressful conditions consistently. That’s ludicrous.
