Modified Tundra Rack Swap Preorder

I already had a poly tcase mount on my duals and poly body mounts so had some vibration to start, but noticed no new ones with the motors so probably wouldnt notice anything with a stock trans/body mounts.

 

does anyone know the Length of their steering shaft unmodified that has a 4wd Tacoma from factory?

 

idk how precise you need but about 8".

 

Well the reason I was asking was I saw this photo floating around and guy said it was from a 2wd but I’m thinking it was a 5lug since the prerunner I’m pretty sure is the same length as the 4wd shaft. Would make sense on a 5lug since the suspension would be a lower ride height. My real question would be would the splines match up? Looks awfully simmilar and @Basikbiker said he cut his down 1/12-2 inches shorter which should be close to this length. Interesting thought for a possibly truly bolt up option.

old is the 2wd version (5lug)? And top is for 4wd/prerunner.

Yes the pic was on a review so i cant ask any questions but guy with 2wd said that it was too long so that why im thinking it was a 5 lug. He didn't say anything about it not lining up.

I mean typically you do have to shorten the shaft an inch....I'd venture to bet the splines are the same too

 

The biggest problem is clearance to the frame where the collapsible part is

 

Every step you eliminate makes it easier though. I wouldn’t mind cutting down my shaft and welding but I just like to see if that would work. Clearancing the shaft ain’t a big deal for me.

 

Yeah I'd be stoked if it worked, that's just the one thing I can think of that might be an obstacle

 

I might try to make a steering shaft out of square tube inside a square tube.

Used to make front driveshafts this way on my old crawlers, 1.5" 1/4 wall going inside a 2" 1/4 wall tube so its a precise fit and they would have like 13" of travel.

Acts as splines, and in this case I could have it stock length extended, and give it some good travel so it both fits the Tundra rack shortness, and has extra "uptravel" for accident purposes.

Use some threaded bolt holes to hold tension on the tubes so it doesnt rattle.

I'll see what I can finger out and keep ya guys updated! I think my goal or the goal if you are using the ecentrics, is to keep stockability, not like the tundra rack should break in the first place. I drive my junk 16+ hours and want to keep the parts store availability for almost everything. This would let me bolt in a stock rack without having to source/carry a spare steering shaft.

 

If that 5-lug steering shaft works out, just carry spare stock shaft or buy a new stock shaft whenever the stock rack gets purchased.

 

Found a pic of a completed one we did. If there's an easier way, that would be dope, but the clearance is very tight

 

Well, just ordered the smaller intermediate shaft for my install. In case no one has tried it yet, I'm hoping to get a decent video of the install while trying my best to communicate all the work that goes into these things. Very much appreciate the hard work, ideas, and write ups here in this thread and the other one in the 2nd Gen section. It's always nice to see a bunch of people coming together to solve problems.


I did a decent search for shaft lengths in several different Toyota/Lexus platforms. Sadly, not many sites share the actual lengths.

This is the intermediate shaft I ordered, it's pictured above. Lets hope it works, I don't have the skills to shorten one on my own.
