    Hi All,
Ive been lurking and searching for a fuel system that fits my needs. I've seen a whole buncha DIY in bed systems and a couple in the spare tire location build with alot of mixed results as to what they should've or would've done differently if they had a redo. In the bed transfer tank won't work for me with my other gear already occupying it. I came across the JD Fab aux fuel kit and was wondering if anyone here has an experience with it?
    https://jdfabrication.com/collections/05-15-6-lug/products/tacoma-rear-gastank-kit
My current spare doesn't fit under there anyways so this is the ideal location for my needs. Any tips/ advice as to what tank to use where to tap into the OE fuel system and ways to avoid throwing codes?

Why not just install an LRA tank.

Post the question here. It’s where the JD guys and guys that use their shit are the most active.

couple reasons for why not LRA, first is taco lean....... second is I can't source the tank and get it delivered in CA due to CA law.

Not worried about passing smog, I'm talking about actually getting my hands on parts.

    More than I can afford
TBH, I didn't know they made that. JD makes pretty damn good stuff.

Pretty cool workaround for aux fuel tanks that you can actually buy in CA. It is spendy but I now sort of want one to use as underbed storage (spare is on my rear bumper so there is just a big empty space down there).

$1200 and it doesn't even include the tank? They're just selling a "frame" for mounting a tank that you'd have to have custom made? Sorry, that's absurd.

I would imagine your local sheetmetal shop would be able to do it cheaper. I know the one I worked at last would do that job for ~$600

search sank into the sand up to the axles at this point .
The options for auxillary fuel tanks is woefully dismal
I guess my 3 gallon kolpin is going to have to make do
the range on these teenie weenie tanks is terrible ( and unsafe for adventuring )

JD's tank box wouldn't need to pass smog unless you removed the OEM tank and used it as the primary fuel source.

I've got an F150 rear tank I'm going to hang in the spare location. It fits really nicely. I'm just working out some finer details(filler neck location, etc.) before I get serious.

sounds good ! the ONLY viable option seems to be self fabrication, that JD fab thing is silly , link recommends a chevy truck tank in their cradle , but a few straps bolting it in place would cost about $50 instead of thousands for their silly "cradle".
even strapping an outboard boat tank in front of the spare tire would be a better option
the Facet 40171 fuel pump is low pressure and has a built in check valve and would make a great transfer pump and would need to tap an inlet into the stock tank
Would have to be removed to pass fascist state emissions restrictions if you happen to live behind enemy lines in a place like CA
one of my biggest annoyances about the Tacoma is the fuel range, seems like I am constantly having to stop for gas and change route plans to get gas while exploring (never pass gas in the desert while in a tacoma ) , I suppose just commuting to work it would be OK having to get gas 3 times a week.

Yeah that's good advice. I'm trying to keep the cost low(<$500) and have the necessary fabrication experience so that should be attainable.

I wasn't going to mess with the tank at all and probably modify the filler neck somewhere to plumb in the transfer. My biggest concern is the dreaded p0456 for a vacuum leak so a pump that seals off is ideal. I'm not sure a check valve is what I need as it will bleed under vacuum. I was considering using the stock f150 pump as it also has a built in sender making wiring a gauge super simple and adding a solenoid inline that opens when the fuel pump is powered.

I'm not sure if that is necessary but we'll see. I guess I could just pull vacuum on the pump itself and see if it holds.
