Let's say I want to use a Chevy engine and a Honda transmission. But, I don't want to really use any frame from any maker. I want to make my own frame from structural steel. I also want to fabricate a cabin of my own design. And all other components, I want to pick and choose.

How hard would it be to register a vehicle like that?

This is honestly a question to ask of your state's DMV.

I think usually people grab some part of an existing vehicle to have a VIN plate, and then build around that. How much of the original vehicle you need to preserve to make that work is up to the state you're in.

Not sure how they do it with kit cars though.

Just easier to find a frame that suits you since the frame will have a VIN you can register the vehicle under and modify it to your needs.

For most states it would be easier to at least use some of the chassis from a donor car, so that you can register the donor's VIN.

There is a different process for getting the state to issue a home-built VIN for registration, but still not impossible to do. That process varies from state to state.

Each state is some what different

It takes a real good safety inspection then getting insurance is very expensive you might not be able to afford it
