I recently purchased this 2nd gen. The undercarriage has some rust (looks to just be surface rust but let me know if you think it’s worse)

I was planning to use a wire wheel to knock it off and then spray it with rustolium. I would finish with fluid film. What do you think? Any advice?

Check the welds around the leaf springs and shock mounts. Also check the boxed section near the catalytic converters. The surface rust I would just spray with fluid film.

If it is just surface rust, I think you have a solid plan there--its what I do when I find rust, but I'm pretty anal about it. Prep/clean the surface, prime+paint, fluid film (I live in Southern California though, so all my rust is surface rust and I skip the fluid film).

I would use a rust-converting primer like Corroseal or something similar (it will usually be a milky white/tan liquid).

@shmn what would that process look like? Grind, converter, rustolium, then fluid film?

No grinding. Just knock off any rusty flakes and then clean the area with brake clean or denatured alcohol or something to remove any oils. You want to leave rust on the metal for the converter to work. But you don't want any flaky rust. The stuff will react with rust to form a blackish primer and once dry you then paint it. Don't need another primer in addition to the rust converter. Have used this stuff in the marine world for years and works great.

This stuff is as good as Corroseal but cheaper.
