    Greetings all,

I’m going to look at a 2021 Tacoma this week that is from California and the owner recently moved here to Texas. Is there anything I need to be aware of from an emissions standpoint or other differences from non-California models?

    Thank you in advance!

Negative, Tacomas all come with standard "50 State" emissions equipment.

Issues are more about registering out of state vehicles in CA. Especially modified ones.

I’m not familiar with Texas’s smog/inspection laws, but only issue would be if the vehicle was modified and Texas doesn’t like the modification.

Stock vehicle should have no issues.

Nope. Just check everywhere, door gaps, underneath, etc.

When I lived in TX - 2003-2006, there wasn't a smog check but a safety inspection.

Every Tacoma sold in California is exactly the same as those sold outside of California emissions wise.

And there is no smog check until 6 years after the purchase date.

With that said, somebody could have modified the hell out of that truck, but that has nothing to do with California.

Really a tragedy that it was locked at such a young age. It was just getting fun.

Some counties in TX do not have emission testing, larger cities / counties do have it.

I had to do it twice for my Tundra this year. Bought it from my dad a few counties away that did not have emissions testing, when I went to register it, I couldn't because I lived in a county that had it. I had to get it inspected and emissions to register it, then do it again a few months later for it's annual.

As long as it passes State Inspection, you are good to go.

More info on the vehicle would help

I am going to start a thread in Off Topic called the Butthurt Thread. Only people who get their feelings hurt in normal threads can post there. This way, they can all cry together and all feel the love from each other in one place, a safe place.

As everyone states, it should be fine as long as its not modified to an extreme level

Wow, thank you for all the quick responses! I’ll be sure and check out everything when I go to look at it this week.

So what’s the rest of the story on “the bumper gaps” and being butthurt? If there’s a link, please post it!

But if you purchase a vehicle outside of CA and “import” it, be it a brand new 50 state emissions vehicle, you still must get it smogged.

Because modding a vehicle is not possible after registration. Totally.

That is correct. And if you bought it in another state, and paid tax on it, but it’s been less than a year since purchase, California will want to charge you MORE tax on the car you bought out of state and already paid tax on.

I live next to a major highway, and I hear illegal ass exhaust on new cars and I’ve seen it all the time. The amount of cars with illegal exhaust, turbos, emissions, flashed ECU around here is ridiculous.

The bolded word is irrelevant lol. They will charge you that tax, no questions asked. I asked for an explanation as to why I was being charged more than expected, and their response was to the tune of “the computer tells us how much you owe. Pay it or no tags.”

But on a different note, at least CA has no safety inspections. Those things are a racket.

Bought my truck in New Mexico, took it to California, paid more in taxes, but was reimbursed for the New Mexico taxes. Had to have it verified by the dmv (checked for mods), smogged, weighed, pay the tax/registration fees and finally a delightful 7 months later I was given my plates. But if you are going from Cali to Texas I doubt there are any problems.
