Well mine's a 2010 four-banger and I just got the code 1316 and this is what it's telling me. This is bullshit I just spent $3,600 fixing my truck after I hit a deer and I was looking through the codes and replacing 02 sensors and maf sensor.
Even after I replaced maf the mad code stays. O2 codes went away tho and this is the dealer explanation You're all right this is total fucking bullshit! I wouldn't even a fucking hassle getting it fixed from the deer if it was going to be known that this was going to happen! This sucks! At least mine can get up a little faster than that sometimes I can hit 60 mph sometimes I can't do 40 depends on if I'm going uphill or downhill or what but it does take me a good quarter to half a mile to get up any speed enough to get on a freeway. In It will not go over 3000rpm... it'll shift. (Automatic trans) Going uphill it won't shift cuz it's uphill and I'm fucked! I work 25 miles away and it sucks driving it! Lately I've been able to average 50 or 60 MPH going there but then on the way home I can't get over 40 miles an hour! And on the way there is more uphill than on the way home...yes it's uphill both ways LOL! I thought that was an old grampa BS tale lol...but yeah between San Antonio and New Braunfels on I35 it's uphill both ways! Good thing it's not snowing!!! Lol. This fucking sucks ass!!![/QUOTE]

I'm assuming you mean P1613 since there is no P1316 code for 2nd gens.
P1613 is for a communication error between the driver module that operates the secondary air system and the PCM, it has nothing to do with the switching valves.
The driver module is under the hood on the right fender near the firewall and the air pump is near the right headlight.
First things to check since you had front end damage are the A/Pump fuse (50A), the air pump itself, and all wiring in the area where the damage was.
I'm thinking your drivability problem is unrelated to the secondary air system as the 2.7l doesn't go into limp mode for a secondary air system fault as far as I know.

    **Update**
This past Friday I started my truck when I was getting ready to leave work, and the CEL came on with a code of P2442.... had to drive the truck home in limp mode, luckily I live 10 minutes from work. Called Hewitt Tech and they told me to take pics of the install so they could verify it was done correctly and I am also thinking they want to know the wiring has not been chewed by rodents. After confirming the pics looked ok, they stated I also need the pressure sensor replacement module, another 190$ and they are on b/o.... I was able to reset the code and get the truck out of limp mode. CEL has not come back since resetting, knock on wood.

Long time lurker but first time poster. I have a good news story to share. I have 203k miles on my 4.0 Taco. I've never had any symptoms of a bad SAI valve until yesterday. I went into limp mode and had the CEL and TRAC OFF lights. Auto parts store pulled the dreaded P2442 code.

I made it home using back roads and then researched the issue. I also pulled the valve and it was obviously fouled. After shaking out the crumbled filter and reassembly, I cleared the code. No limp mode so far, but I know I needed the new valve (25710-31022) or AIS kit (04008-34131). I knew of the 10 year, 150k mile courtesy warranty extension, but I'm past both those.

I stopped by the dealer on the way to work to see if they had the kit in stock and if it had all the needed parts (note: the kit retails for $160 and, at least on the web, contains the valve. Separately, the valve $700+).

The very nice parts counter lady said "wait, this may be covered under a recall" Sure enough, after checking my VIN, I'm covered, even with the advanced mileage and years. I have an appointment Monday to get the work done.

My fingers are crossed that all goes well. I'll report back on Monday afternoon.

Edit: I'm sure this document is found elsewhere on this thread, but it doesn't hurt to link it again https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...wQFnoECA8QAQ&usg=AOvVaw2Nup5quK0iZUaAgAsGwLyf
I do not believe I received notice of this in the mail, but that's probably because it's a "special service campaign" and not technically a recall.

There is a reason why this thread has 57 pages. The Secondary Air Injection is failure prone and you can spend all day reading horror stories of owners trying to address. I wanted to pass along some recent threads we posted about the SAIS. If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out, DM or give us a call.

Thanks everybody for the posts. Lots of helpful information. Here's my story about my 2015 V6, with about 90K miles.

I recently had the CEL and TRAC warning lights come on, with the accompanying loss of power or "limp mode". Plugged in my OBD reader and using DashCommand app, got a P1613 code. By the way, my app indicated the maximum output was 45 Hp at full throttle in limp mode! I could get to 60 Mph on a flat highway, but it took a while :) I'm not clear if the fuel delivery is restricted to limit power, or just RPM, but my fuel economy was not much better during limp mode.

After researching it here, I figured it was the secondary air system failure, and expected an expensive fix. I called my Toyota dealer mechanic friend who thought the same thing, but had to look at it first to diagnose. Well, he checked it out and good news (?), it wasn't the expensive fix expected.

It was mice that chewed a bunch of wiring under the washer fluid bottle, among other places. I had no other electrical problems, except this issue. So the 1613 code is the communication failure, not the device failure. It all makes sense now. And makes sense why the code would be thrown after a front end collision/repair.

I didn't need parts, but it still cost me about $500 in labour to find and fix all the damaged wiring. Fun fact - the Toyota dealer had to buy a roll of rodent repelling wire wrap tape from the Honda dealer. Seems Honda's have this rodent problem regularly. All the chewed wires are now wrapped in that stuff. Fingers crossed that's the end of this problem.

Welp mine just threw the code today. Luckily it was the day AFTER my state inspection. Time to research the delete.

2008 Taco owner. I the this p2440 code today. Auto Zone said some carb cleaner would cure it by getting rid of carbon buildup keeping the valve open, but that sounds like bogus advice based on this thread.

Looking for advice. Can't do my own repair. Displaced from house after a fire so no tool access, and I break em worse before I fix it right.

They aren't hard to pull apart, then you could see about cleaning them. I deleted mine for the most part, but if I did it again, I'd VFTuner it completely out of the ECU and junk the whole system.

If you are looking through this, I thought this may help. My sons 2012 Tacoma with 211k miles in it, is getting the SAIS codes and being put into limp mode. Our dealership is going to replace the system under the service extension on the secondary air injection system. They are not charging us for this. I do not know if this is just our dealership or if others will do it also. I just thought I would put this out there. I’m actually astounded that they are going to replace it under warranty with 211k miles on it.
    Located in South Carolina.
Dropped the truck off today and they are running it through under the service extension.

If you get any useful info from the dealership about this issue - like a recall/fix-it # from Toyota - please post it. I just got the 2443 code this morning while backing out of my garage. 2014 with 238,000 miles. I called the dealership and they ran my VIN and said there was no open recalls for mine. Curious how your son's 2012 would qualify but a 2014 wouldn't?

20240329_140724.jpgI pulled the pump out and apart this afternoon. Spinning the fan with my finger I could feel it sticking in one spot. I popped it apart and sanded the inside of the lid and the top of the fan where they were clearly rubbing. I put it all back in and cleared the code. No issues for the rest of the day.

2012s got an extended warranty on the SAIS, it wasn't a recall.
The system was updated in 13 to do a purge at shutdown which decreased the number of problems the system had thus no extended warranty on 13+ models.

Did you check the foam filter? That is the cause of alot of the SAIS issues because it deteriorates and gets sucked into the valves.

Go with the Hewitt bypass and be done with it. The only reason why we didn’t continue to use it was that the 2012 had a reflash done on the ECU and the bypass would not recognize it. It worked until the SAIS kicked on again intermittently because that’s what the reflash made it do. The Hewitt Co is about a mile from my house. They are very smart and good at what they do. It’s a good product.

It hasn't had the foam filter since the first week I brought it home new. I put the Uni filter on immediately.

I'll keep an eye on it and probably go with the Hewitt kit if it throws a code again.

Thanks for posting that pic of the guts. What a dumb piece of crap. I put the Uni on my 2015 several years ago, but my truck is pretty low mileage, keep fingers crossed. Especially if I'm aired down 50 miles from pavement...that is 100 miles from a fix...
