I am looking for support from the biker community.

I found (what I thought) was a great deal on a 2006 Yamaha R6. The dealer listed it online at $5499. When I went to the dealer they had it tagged as $9999. The dealer was cool, they are a national company. They honored the price. They tried to jack it up with all their service and prep crap. I declined it all, including the warranty.

So, I have had bikes since 1984, so I know what to look for. It had 4K miles, clean fairings, tread decent on tires, slip on exhaust. Test ride good. The problem came up on ride home Monday. After a good long drive I started having down shifting issues that were not there on test ride. May have needed to fully heat up to show up. I thought it needed clutch adjustment, so I did. Rode it for a while today, same issue. Will not shift 3rd to 2nd, 2nd to first without some work. Reading online appears the shift forks are easily bent.

So I called dealer today, they will pick it up Thursday. They sounded like they would take care of it, almost like they knew. I paid cash and no warranty. Am I screwed with a 2k trans repair or you think it is on dealer for selling the bike in that condition?

So pissed, it is an awesome bike. I am being super nice and patient with the dealer. So far they seem like it will be handled, but not sure how. Refund? Full repair? Make me pay? I am not bashing the dealer, just crying for sympathy because it is sitting in the garage begging to be ridden.

    It’s all up to them.
I know when I bought my truck from the dealer, they made me sign a paper. I either pay $250 and they will fix anything or let me return the truck for like a week or so.
I declined so they made me sing a paper that it is as is once I sign the paper work.

We don’t have “as is” I believe in NC. The bill of sale only says all sales final. I could not find anything on point by googling consumer rights.

I just have to wait and see. Like waiting to open a Xmas present. It is there but you can’t touch it.

I work at a motorcycle dealer in SoCal.

If it was a used bike, and you denied all warranty or services, you will probably foot the bill.

That said, it should have been inspected and problems/ due/ shortly due maintenance been fixed or completed before sale.

I’d ask to see any service RO that have been done on the bike while in their possession. The very least it may be an oil change or chain service, but maybe a more major repair.

We evaluate bikes when we buy them, basically a short test (1.5mi) ride and visual inspection. Then factor in what needs to be serviced/ fixed before we’d be able to sell it.

stuff that’s needing major repairs we don’t touch. Dealers in my experience don’t try and flip shitbox bikes, as it’s just too risky and expensive.

what would give me hope is that you said problems occurred on the ride home. Since it’s been so little time, we as a dealer would try and make it “right” for you as a consumer to try and maintain good faith, even it it makes the bike close to $0 profit.

Thank you for the reply. The thing is the dealer gives me the deal and there is $675 for doc fees and title work, and then $888 for parts and labor. As I should, I asked what the heck was $888 for and how they justify it. I got the usual we check the bike over, make sure it is all working, etc. I could not get a full detailed invoice as if it was my bike being serviced there. I could not get anything more than that is the charge, Based on the out the door price I was still ahead. (Little did I know)

Fingers crossed, kills me seeing it sitting there. I put 63 miles on it, 33 were highway home.

sucks this happened to you. keep hearing scary stories about dealers.

where i bought my tacoma, i later heard that the dealer would get a f250 with a cracked head gasket and put in that solution (pretty much sand) to slow down/seal the crack. of course that didnt work for long.

my tacoma i later found out was in a little fender bender and they spray painted a corner of the front bumper and then repainted the rear section of the bed. they didnt even take off the "TRD Off Road" decal. they just clear coated over it. big sad.

I hope it all works out for you. That is also my favorite color scheme from Yamaha.

$10K for a used 2006 R6 seems really out of line for a used bike.

    Update, (as if anyone cares)

At last we spoke I purchased a used R6 with 4K miles and a jacked up tranny. I was worried I would be stuck with this used lemon.

WELL, the dealer purchased it back. Very reluctantly. All I can say is luckily the dealer was a national chain. The manager tried to say I bought the bike as-is. I said that was never in their bill of sale, they sold a bad bike and they knew it. He kept on denying my refund. Half way thru I stopped the conversation and got real. I told him don’t take the bike, I will post this on Twitter, Facebook, call a complaint into his corporate, contact the state department fair trade, contact BBB and file a small claims suit. Needless to say I got my 7k back. AND the topper, they put the bike right back up for sale, for more than I paid.

So not just car dealers are scum. I went on to buy a Suzuki GSX-S 750 new but did not like it. I just picked up my Gixxer 600 last Thursday and it rocks.

Nice. Happy it worked out for you. That is awesome. Not often dealers do that.

    makes me want a bike.
Was about to buy this Honda cbr1000rr. Was going to finance a part of it….but what stopped me, was the price of the insurance. Full coverage was going to be $5500 a year.

Insurance is a killer on these type of bikes. They are so often stolen. But the CBR is one bad bike. I had an RR in 2006. Insane.

If you are not sold on a super sport the naked bikes are cheap insurance wise. The GSX-S 750 I just traded in was $375 for 6 months. The GSX-R tripled that.

True. I had a 2012 cbr1000rr that everyone loved….but sold it to get married. Needed money. Not sure it was a good trade. Lol.

but yes. I’m also looking at Yamaha fz09.
The Suzuki are great bikes. I had a 2009 gsxr 600….it was just a super simple, easy bike to ride

just have to post my video. If you go to 2:20….that was my fav thing to do in that bike. The back fire was insane

A 600 gearbox would be about the last thing in the world I'd want to be reincarnated as.

Might be a bit of a stretch to say they knew about the issue. Why would they offer a warranty if they knew the bike would come back in a few days? From their perspective they're either going to have to fix it now or fix it later..for free..

They probably got it on trade from a guy who knew about the issue and didn't say anything. The dealer rides it a few miles and everything seems fine, they list it for sale and that's it

They offered a warranty and you declined it. They can't be expected to know the entire history of a used bike. What else are they supposed to do?

There are a lot of dealers, mom and pop shops, who are scum….place where I got my Tacoma from, they buy trucks with blown head gaskets and put that sand stuff into the radiator to stop it leaking.

they resprayed my truck in 2 areas, and when they painted the bed of the truck, they just cleared over the “trd” sticker on the bed.
Lot of dealers are scum for sure.

Few things with that. The make money on the warranty, so they offer it. It I thru a 3rd party so it is only profit for them. The warranty does not go into affect for 30 days. Then they would then make money fixing the bike they sold.

I think they knew because they sure knew after I returned the bike and it was back up on their site and listed in Cycle trader next day. That tranny fix is a big job and they would not fix it for me when I offered to split the cost.

Damn, I didn't know those old bikes were worth that much. Did covid or the gas prices cause them to sky rocket? I had quite a few bikes in my time but got out of that game a few years ago.

Yes the price shocked me too for a 16 yr. old bike. they sure didn't used to hold their value.
