Keep pondering on switching from my Silverado to a Taco. Just can’t stand the Chevy DOD issues.
I don’t tow and rarely haul anything heavy so the low level HP & Tq of the Taco V6 doesn’t bother me at this point.
The truck would be used for a grocery getter and hunting/travel.
For approximately $10k more for the TRD what do you get besides tires, skid plates, suspension?
I’m thinking an SR5 with the V6, auto, limited slip, might be a better value and still could add better upgrades later for less money.
I’ve gotten by for 40 years without crawl control and my big need is simply 4wd, cruise, tilt, a/c, power widows & locks.
    Remote start would be nice.
Is there more to a TRD that makes it a “value”?

    Under development
I assume you are talking Trd pro, there is also the Trd off-road and sport in there also. With a few more features than the sr5. Take a few test drives, they are free

There's a few TRD models but.. the biggest reason to grab the Off-Road is for the factory rear diff locker. If there was a cheaper version with that option I would have gotten it, I didn't want to deal with rebuilding a third member on a brand new truck.

Other than that, it's mostly suspension and trim changes. The Off-Road is great if you plan to do a bunch of big upgrades, Pro is great if you want the best off-the-lot version of the truck and don't want to modify it much. I went with the O/R because I knew I'd be changing everything. No ragerts.

Not necessarily. The OR and Sport are up there depending on add-ons when compared to the SR5.

My wife’s Outback does that. Makes no sense and is frustrating.

    Use the search feature.

This post will be 25 pages of TRD OR owners convincing you the OR is the only trim capable of driving "off road" even though 50% of them have never engaged the locker or used CC.

Annnd queue the 'piece of mind' crowd.... Is it safe to use 4x4 on pavement to exercise my shift actuator? :anonymous:

What do you mean dealing with rebuilding a 3rd member?

    To add a diff locker.

Overall, I'm happy as hell with my Off-Road. I didn't want leather, the Fox suspension the Pro comes with or the hood scoop. No-brainer for me to get the OR.

While GM does have major issues with DOD , the wonderful thing about the free market is, the aftermarket has responded heavily to this issue. Texas speed makes some excellent kits to rid yourself of that headache. I’m unsure of the rest of the quality of the truck, I understand your Hesistation and I myself stopped messing with GM after my 07 Tahoe had dod issues. Spending money on a dod delete wasn’t something I wanted to do. But that’s me. If you like the truck, understand you have options.

as far as Trd vs SR5 goes, you get a locker for the rear diff , crawl control, slightly upgraded suspension , different rims, and there’s probably a couple other small things that don’t equate to the price difference (IMO). Also IMO , if you don’t Offroad , like really Offroad (not gravel roads) you’ll never need or use the locker. You have to be honest with yourself and see if you’re truly going to use the features you’re spending extra for on the Trd off-road. It’s your money, spend it how you see fit.

these are my opinions. I don’t want some salty 3rd gen owner (there’s a lot) jumping down my throat on how he had to use his locker backing out of the driveway of his moms cousins aunts nephews house one snowy Christmas and that alone paid for itself.

Do the 22/23 HD GM trucks have DOD, ir is GM building them with out if it was a feature on them. The Z71 HDs are growing on me. Does the Z71 and X39 have a rear locker?

I think you can order a base Ford Ranger 4x4 with out the FX4 pkg with a rear locker as a stand alone option. The FX pkg definitely comes with a rear locker.

I’d be interested to know the answer to that myself. I believe I read something somewhere about them having the option of not getting the dod. If it’s still a true ls based platform , then that’s a solid engine

The internal engine components remain the same regardless of the DOD chip installed on the half tons. 3/4 tons are not an option.

The Rangers are not an option.

I've owned three tacos, two TRDs and one base model... And my favorite one was the base model.

The base truck did everything the TRDs did and had a better ride. I spend a lot of time on back roads that aren't paved compared to most people, so I'm not talking about a truck being a pavement queen. Ride is more important than most people think when they are buying a truck, but in the excitement of buying it is something they often ignore.
