Looking to replace all four shock absorbers/struts. What brand have you all had luck with or would recommend?

Forgot to add that years ago mine got the leaf spring upgrade when they took off the squeaky three spring factory pak and replaced them with the quiet four spring TRD pack.

Are looking to lift the truck, or are you staying stock height?

I'll be staying at the factory height.

youre asking a very broad question so ill give you a broad answer: most people replace their shocks with bilstien 5100's. shocks are shocks, "4x4 shocks" isnt a thing im pretty sure.

I put the 4x4 on there because most of the base model Tacoma pickups with the 2TR-FE were not 4x4 but rather 2 wheel drive only with a lower suspension than the 4x4's or the pre-runners. Mine did not come from the factory with the bilsteins so I just wanted to see what others where running and happy with.

im pretty sure a base 4x4 has same shocks as 4x2, maybe someone here can confirm. bilstien 5100 with stock springs and lowest notch is stock height youll be happy, a lot of people go with them as a must do upgrade.

5100s are nice upgrade over factory shocks. Just install your springs on the lowest setting and you're all set. If not 5100s then stock 4600s. Must admit I'm surprised yours didn't come stock with Bilstein 4600s.

    Stock shocks are not 4600.
4600 are a big upgrade over stock TRD shocks.

my 2018 sr5 4x4 came with shocks that look like a toothpick compared to those two. im assuming they use these toothpicks in the 4x2 too.

I’d venture say they are not the yellow TRD shocks.
I can’t confirm it, because I don’t know anyone with a 2WD to look at.

If you want to save a bit of money I would say get 3rd Gen TRD Off-road take off coil overs and shocks. They will be a definite step up from your stock shocks (even the gen 2 Bilstein TRD OR shocks.) You can find many from craigslist, facebook market or here in the tacoma world parts buy and sell section with a few miles on them and will give a 1 inch level in the front along with a firmer ride. Otherwise you can go with Bilstein 4600 or 5100.

Then perhaps 4600s would be a nice upgrade with a moderate price tag.

Bilstein recommends 4600s for non-lifted trucks, and 5100s for lifted trucks -- though you can set 5100s at zero lift if you want to.

I just installed 4600s on our '05 TRD OffRoad at ~109K miles. It was getting floaty, especially with a load in the bed. Much better now.

Ok....sounds like I may go with the 4600's.

Like I said ...not all 4x4 Tacoma's came with the Bilsteins. Mine certainly didn't. But ever since I got the TRD springs installed in the back I always figured I should get the strut to match....now I wonder if there is any difference in the front coil springs between the typical SR-5 and the TRD? Maybe time to match them all the way around so it's nothing but TRD springs and shocks all the way around....

Of course I am also thinking about finding a Pre-runners rear axle....then really having some fun....best suspension and transmission mated to the most bullet proof four banger ever!

I'm replacing mine with 3rd Gen TRD Bilsteins next week. It should level out the front a bit and will be a pretty good upgrade from my base model shocks.

If you are patient you can find people off loading the entire coilovers and rears for 100 bucks. That happened to me last week on here.
