I have a 2000 tacoma trd v6 278k miles. Few days ago engine has a loud knocking noise. Further inspection it sound like its more on the passanger side. At idle it is loud, when i play with the throttle it sometimes stops knocking... Very odd. Truck runs and drives fine, no engine light no smoke, no miss, and knocking goes away at about 35-40mph. Could this just be carbon buildup over the years? Love my truck and would hate to tear it down for a simple fix

Good point..poor use of wording maybe? It rattles loud like all a lifter issue? Once i get a chance i will upload a video. When i was on the highway truck seemed to of lost power like it tried to die then was fine and when i stopped is when the rattling started. Oil full n very clean, tempture was fine. Noise is louder on the passenger side.

Also..no engine light or warning light of any kind turned on. Sorry, trying to explain best i can. Truck was very low on gas ( gas light turned on) so i stopped for gas and hit the highway.. about 8ish miles after is when truck acted wierd for a second then was fine.. stoped about 15miles later and heard the rattleing topend of engine.. checked oil.. good n clean, truck was not overheating.. at idle rattle seems to be more passanger valve cover area and when i fiddle with the throttle sometimes rattle goes away...

I’d take off the air intake hose and see if I can narrow it down. After that, if it still sounds like it’s coming from your valve cover then I’d hand it off to a pro.

But if I were you then you’d be me!

Try this…drain out 1/2 quart of oil and add in 1/2 quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizing treatment. This is half of what Lucas has you adding. I did that and it quieted down the sound you describe. I recently had my oil changed without adding any Lucas and the noise returned. I’m planning on adding a conservative amount of Lucas Oil again. Also, like yours, my engine burns no oil.

Tried to upload video..not sure why it didn't..anyway so drove it to the store and now oil light flickers. Popped hood and can hear it even louder and really sounds like the passanger side back cylinder area. Going to tow it to a friends shop monday. He will pull valve cover and timeing cover to inspect everything and compression test $80.. so seemed reasonable . Will
    inform here what results are

Unusual.... Let us know, but I have a bad feeling only because I have very near 300k. Mine is getting tired after owning her for 23yrs. I dont like that light

Additives are NOT the answer and they aren’t going to magically make an engine knock/rattle go away. Try some actual diagnostics. Pull the spark plugs and inspect them. Do a leak-down to check compression in all cylinders. Pull the valve covers off and inspect/adjust valves. Inspect motor mounts… There’s something going on and its not as easy as adding mystery oil.
