Locking Tailgate recommendations?

Before I install an MX4, or other folding tonneau cover, on my 2011 Tacoma Prerunner long bed TRD Sport I need to get a locking tailgate. Looking for recommendations. Thanks

 

As an affordable option, you could put a hasp and padlock on the inside.

PL5400 for mine. It's the manual version that uses your Taco key. Went on pretty much per instructions except that I couldn't see any way to get it inserted thru the tailgate opening without removing the metal plate that turns when you pull the handle. Came off easily tho, just had to put the spring back in place when reinstalling (do look at where it engages before removal). Easy job.

They also have a model with a solenoid that connects to the factory lock/unlock signal for the passenger doors. You can also add that functionality later to the manual version if you wish.

PL5400. I didn't change the rod like the instructions say and I haven't had any issues.

 

I have the 5400 as well, and it could be just mine, but the handle is super stiff which makes me feel like I going to break the latch every time I open the tailgate. That said it’s lasted 2 years fine.
Plus I’m too lazy to lock it every time manually lol.

It works, but wasn’t up o my satisfaction so I’ll be going back to OEM and gonna try the model that wires to the power door locks.

 

Pace edwards make a great lock that you can lock and unlock with your key fob

 

I was doing some research for someone who has a 2nd gen. I installed the oem power lock tailgate for my 3rd gen but at no point did I find any info on oem power locking tailgates for the 2nd gen. Did they really never come with the option or am I tripping?

Pace Edwards does have an option but it's a little more complicated for no realized benefit (IMO). Other options on the market are generally inferior to the P&L and Pace Edwards (again IMO).

2nd gen never came with an OEM locking option. All locks for our tailgates are aftermarket.

 

I went with the OEM power tailgate lock. Easy install works well with your fob.

 

You have a 3rd gen, this is 2nd gen forum. No OEM 2nd gen options.

 

The reason I went with pace edwards is that ive read numbers posts about how p&l has failed on them. Im going on two years now with no issues. I also like that i can just unlock driver door with one press and two to unlock tailgate.

I went manual pop and lock, after a year I upgraded it to power lock. I also have a adjustable stainless steal clamp. Figured that would be enough
the power lock isnt hard to install, but it does take some time and a little swearing...
The manual lock is really easy to install. Really pleased with he setup, and have had it manual lock for 7 years.
The handles do fad pretty fast, I would advise you to paint it first.
I ended up using truck bed liner when I installed the power lock.
