I'm with you, imperial measurements are so stupid I can't understand why it's even a thing. But my contractor neighbor taught me how to read a tape measure. Ignore all the 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 measurements and just count the 16th marks. So 1/2 = 8/16, 3/4 = 12/16, 5/8 = 10/16, etc and since everything is 16ths you just drop that part. Once you get used to it it's faster and adding things like 3/8 + 1/4 is as easy as 6 + 4 = 10.

Call them anyway. They love customer service so much they might honor the warranty regardless.

I grew up helping my dad wrench on all our cars, and as his Plumber's "apprentice" all through elementary, junior, and senior high schools. My eyes got calibrated pretty precisely. To this day, I can tell the measurement marks on a tape measure instantly. I can also tell by sight down to probably 1/16".

But most people who don't use a tape measure 1000xday for years and years, or turn wrenches and need to very quickly learn by sight the different not/bolt/wrench sizes so you can bring your dad the right wrench the first time........

My grandfather worked on the farm all his life and used to be able to tell the size of a nut or bolt by eye.

It comes with practice. After a few weeks in the shop you start getting confident.

After a few months you start getting good

I could do that with English (and American) size stuff when I wrenched for a living because that's what I worked on. Pretty much still can. The metric stuff, nope.

Air Force jets intercept 2 Russian bombers flying close to Alaska

The Air Force dispatched two F-16 fighter jets to intercept a pair of Russian bombers that flew close to Alaska on Monday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement.

Although the two Russian Tu-95 Bear-H bombers did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD said it "detected, tracked, positively identified and intercepted" the aircraft as they were "entering and operating within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone."

Air defense identification zones are areas of airspace that require all aircraft to be identified and located and to have their flight plans controlled "in the interest of national security," according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

NORAD, a combined air defense organization of the U.S. and Canada, said the Russian activity was "not seen as a threat nor is the activity seen as provocative." The appearance of Russian bombers and their interception by U.S. fighter jets do come at a fraught time in the relationship between the two countries, however.

The situation has grown more tense since Russia invaded Ukraine, which the U.S. has supported with humanitarian and military aid while slamming Moscow with economic sanctions.

I think there was one time when the US pilots held a playboy centerfold to the canopy and once when the Russians mooned the US pilots. Didn't a US pilot do an inverted pass once?
