So I finally got the right sink in and it's installed!



The sink install itself was easy, but the plumbing was a pain in the ass! It never would drain right so I knew there was a venting issue. Corrected that with a Studor-vent.

It might look like a science experiment, but can drain a sink full of water in a hurry now!

 

It's far better than what was there and actually drains now...

Stunk to high heaven for a while though. Between the gasses from the septic and glue, my house smells interesting now...

 

Replacing windows (original sliders were installed in the 60's and weren't functional) on a house built in 1776. 18" wide sheathing boards. Nothing is plumb/level/square.

 

The most fun is making it appear plumb, square and level.

If those boards could talk, it would be a helluva tale!

Finally fixed my kitchen sink leak. The issue appears to have been with the nut I used to join the pipe to the sink basket.

Removed the plastic nut and replaced it with a metal nut. Problem solved

When I got my place there was a fairly sizeable palm that I looked at and said, that looks dead, sure enough it was and the few wilting fronds left on it completely fell off shortly after.

It was probably planted too close to the well and over watered thus.

That raised it's own concern, palms being technically grasses aren't the most structurally sound 'trees' to begin with and I didn't know how long it was going to stay up dead.

On top of that it was leaning towards my shed and well pump, I wanted to do something about it before it took those out which was going to be challenging due to again it *wanting* to fall that way if I just took the chainsaw to it.

Fortunately I have a winch and a good buddy who loves rigging to come help me (the first gen) and (the white sheep of the family) my Uncle's Tundra will be doing the haul away, currently on loan due to my truck missing it's rear drive shaft...






We rigged it up with a snatch block around a conveniently placed oak to redirect the winch line so I could pull it down away from my truck, had no idea what was going to happen, the trunk could have exploded for all I knew.



And promptly pulled just the top right off...





Many laughs had, we rerigged the lower half took up tension the truck started to dig in and slide even standing on the brakes and the winch line was taught enough it may as well have been solid rod so we slacked it slightly and gave it a little help from the chainsaw and were able to pull the rest down fairly easily and anticlimactically.

Definitely ain't no solid oak but I was surprised as rotten as it was I still couldn't just winch it down.




Ran out of day light to do much else but the core was definitely rotting.

 

Ive fought a few palm trees in my yard. one came down halfway easily, but the second I couldn't get to move even with a good bit of force. had to cut it at the base and leave the stump. its been a couple of years now and its still there... I couldn't get a good enough grip to get it out of the ground. palms suck to remove.

 

Bezos finally had the Chamberlain garage door motor on sale that I've had my eye on for a year or more, Prime Day Early Access gave me 25% off. It got delivered last night and turns out they sent the lesser model with only 1,000 lumens of flood light instead of the one I ordered that has 2,000 retina blistering lumens. I contacted their chat and they were a bit ambiguous about the refund/replacement process but ultimately I insisted on a replacement not a refund, because I can no longer order a replacement at the sale price. Well this morning I get confirmation that the new correct one is on its way, and I am to "donate or destroy" the wrong one they sent me. Dammit, I would've preferred the refund if it meant keeping it! Free model > ideal model. Anyone near SoCal want a helluva deal on a new motor?

Question for an electrician (or someone who knows). A customer has a thermostat controlled exhaust fan in their small utility/boiler room (it gets hot). I went to replace it with a standard thermostat expecting the standard red & white low voltage wires. But there are two hots connected to the thermostat. What type of thermostat is this? Customer wants it switched out to a digital. It's non programmable btw.

 

That is a line voltage rated thermostat. Typically used for managing electric baseboard heat, with a form C contact one side is high acting and the other is low acting. Let me do some digging, but to my knowledge these are typically thermal coil type switching devices, aka analog.

 

Just found this. Would it work? Does it matter which hot connects to which wire?

No, that is for heating. What is the amp draw on the fan, or what is its rated watts? You might be able to use something else not rated for 13 amps at 120v.
