in the last picture I noticed a small hole at the top right of the frame. What is this?

unfortunately the only way to tell is with a hammer. Mine looked liked this maybe slightly better/worse depending on the area and had a good hole by the cat

That's a weld seam for the bumpstop, not a hole.

The frame looks normal for the age. Ignore the folks here who have never seen rust. Typically the holes start on the inside wall of the frame next to the cats. Look here:

Someone else probably bought the truck already

Hard to tell. That hole looks like a patch. Is that RTV, or mud on the bumpstop. It may be a terrible looking weld. Get a report to check if the truck has been in a wreck.

Edit: Pics of nominal bump stop

That pic looks like the Cam had a hard life. Nominal cam.

    All stock, baby!
That is one of the least rusty Tacoma’s that I can recall anyone asking about in this forum in the last few months. Does not look bad at all. It would be very reasonable, however, to get it inspected if the owner will let you take the time to have that done. You’re going to spend a lot of money on this, so that’s a good idea in any case.

Any preventative options? (Besides not getting it wet) :)

Fluid film or wool wax or cosmoline. Be sure to do inside the boxed areas, rust likes to hide until it's too late.

Nice score. Blue stuff, not sure. Next oil change see how far it goes u der the drain bolt. When drain bolt is out clean up that area. Could be residue from crush washers ? I use a aluminum crush washer with a blue coating on it.

looks like surface corrosion, look INSIDE the frame rails next to the catylitic converters, thats where these trucks like to rust badly. and the blue stuff looks like RTV that someone used on the drain plug for some odd reason..peel it off next oil change and see..and one more thing, start using fluid film or something to preserve your frame.

Why do you think they'd use RTV? you think the plug was leaking or something? Sure hope nothing has been stripped in there.
Thanks for the fluid film suggestion. I've been looking around at what products I could use to clean, detail, and preserve the frame.
