    You can use 5w-30 no problem. Take a look at this chart from a Mexico Tacoma, all the weights listed are expectable including 15w 40 provided you stay in the temperature range.

    Theres a reason Toyota recommends a specific weight oil. A heavier (thicker) weight oil can actually contribute to premature wear.

    But it's your truck, do what you will.

    Its definitely true, to a point. Like don't dump 75-140 in your engine and expect good things to happen. But given the chart in the Mexico version of the owners manual, I'm sure the listed ones will have no ill effects.
