Same here. 4k annual miles so oil change every 12 months while tranny and diff every 3 years.

For my last oil change, I started using the Havoline full synthetic 5/30 6-quart box for $23 from walmart. I use an oversize filter, so I put all six quarts in. Will be putting it in wife’s ‘18 RX350 also (0/20); it also holds all six quarts. More convenient than holding partially filled jugs for the next oil change.

    edited to add ‘full synthetic’.

Walmart was out of the 5 qt oil one time so I bought the oil in a box - different experience

Yes, I had to cut to top of the box a bit to avoid spilling - the spout is too far from the end of the box. Easy peasy and worth the effort imo.

Something I looked for but found nothing. Considering there's room for a taller filter.

Beyond that, asking what's the best oil is like asking who makes to best french fries or who's the most beautiful human. Everyone has their opinion, everyone is right.

Here are three oversize options; thread size is 3/4-16. If you don't want Wix, use cross reference chart of your preferred oil filter brand. I’ve used all three oversize filters and prefer the 51068. I currently have the 51515XP but it sits right under the engine cover that I have to remove it in order to be able to unscrew the filter by hand. I’ve also used Purolator One/Boss and Fram Tough Guard.

Wix 51348 3.4” tall, 2.92” OD - oem direct replacement
    Wix 51516 4.8” tall, 2.92” OD
    Wix 51068 4.3” tall, 3.66” OD
    Wix 51515 5.2” tall, 3.66” OD

If you’re worried about engine wear you should go back to a stock air filter. Most if not all abrasive contaminants in your oil are particles that get by the air filter.

Referring to the post "depends on your driving habits..," shmn wrote, "Is that a subliminal message for retirees?" Depends as in Depends Diapers that old people wear. As a soon-to-be retiree, I thought that was hysterical.

Thanks. I may try the xp next time.

I looked at the Baldwin cross site, found Baldwin B2, which is 5 13/32 tall but 3 11/16 wide. I think tall would fit but probably not width. I just measured the napa 1516 I just picked up, it's barely less than 3" wide.

@Waasheem I like that blood orange look. I’ve bought them before. Looks like they use regular media. The filter width fits. The width of the gasket is what to look at, and these fit.

So if you don’t heat the engine up enough to burn off the condensation that builds up in the block , that’s not going to hurt your oil? Sorry man, reducing viscosity, taking away from lubricating properties, rusting on the inside of the block….. this isn’t showing up on an oil analysis?

That’s why he is saying to go by the data instead of listening to other peoples opinion. You just gave an opinion and he prefers to see the oil report that actually is believable.

I’m not saying that at all. What I’m saying is that NONE of us can say how big of a factor that really is. It’s heavily dependent on how much he drives, how long he drives, climate in his area… It might be something he needs to worry about and may need to shorten intervals. Or maybe it’s not and he can run a longer interval. You can’t predict which it’ll be and neither can I. No one here can and anyone who says they can is blowing smoke up your ass.

But the OP can use oil analyses to learn and find out for himself. It’s the only way to know for sure. Otherwise it’s all just hearsay, guesses, speculation - and honestly, a whole lot of bullshit. It never ceases to amaze me how much people don’t understand about oil. I think most people are still stuck in nearly century old thinking. Oil doesn’t degrade nearly as quickly or easily as people like to think - at least not in modern vehicles.

Totally agree, in your oil analysis over the years, has water specifically been found? I really thought that was the main reason for changing oil sooner with no long trips.

Nope, not one single time. But, I live in a relatively dry and mild climate so that could play a role.

Also, for context, we have a vehicles that just sit a lot. Wife works from home so she sees a couple short trips a week at most. Then a road trip or two a year. My track car only gets driven once a month at most usually, sometimes sits for months. And my truck maybe once a week or sometimes once a month just to keep the fluids moving. Never had moisture show up in any of the samples from those vehicles.

I’m due for some new samples soon. Just changed the truck oil (10k mi) and will be doing the wife’s car soon too. It’s been two years since I changed her oil. Currently eyeing 8-10k mi intervals in that car and may increase that if the reports are good.

I’ve seen oil come out extremely milky as in white. When it's that bad, I've seen sensors fail, cam position, crank position, coolant temp.

    That's engine failure.
