Time to increase your limits on insurance and insure your modification since at times insurance won't want to pay up

Sure and it’s also more disposable junk that doesn’t get fixed, just destined for a scrap heap/landfill.
Yeah I get the “life saving” attributes of the design but there has to be a balance. I can’t accept the write it off and give me a new truck spoiled ass consumerism mentality. This is not sustainable.

Yeah, you’re right, deadlines shouldn’t matter in life. Everyone should go at their own pace and everyone around them should accept it.

Yeah... I kinda hope so. Wouldn't trust a cheap repair towing the trailer with the family.

Yes, we drive like idiots compared to Europe, and have incredibly lame licensing requirements. But that map has the wrong stat in the denominator. I live in the super-ultra-death state with the number in it. I drove my Tacoma today and didn't die. Even rode a motorcycle and didn't die.

When you combine massive interstate trucking/travel traffic + extremely high winds and serious weather and then divide it by the tiny (580,000) population, you get that crazy high 254 number. I've done most of my driving in the 80-119 California. Driving in Wyoming is 100 times safer (unless you're a deer).

But to OP, sorry about your beautiful truck. Hope insurance is kind and replaces or at least reframes it.

Mom got hit in her ancient Suburban by a drunk idiot 30 years ago. She was stopped, he was doing 60. Truck absorbed almost none of the impact. Absolutely annihilated his car (hilariously... engine block on ground, front end GONE).

She's fine now, but medical bills and lost work hours from back damage could've bought several Suburbans at 2022 prices.

Go look up the costs of soft tissue and back injuries.

This is what is needed more often. Harsh..perhaps (though I'd opine nothing is too harsh when some innocent is killed). Effective..I bet it is.

I'm afraid to even ride my bikes near my house for similar reasons, I live in a rural area so it's not like I'm in the city. Plus even if I'm hit and the person is punished, that doesn't reverse my death or injury nor restore the bike that I'm sure would be destroyed.

It's especially incensing at night when you see the goddamn phone light bright as can be and people just don't care. I have my hands free hooked up and even at that I don't like talking on the phone.

Plus what's the cost to the change of your life?

Not from an accident, but for a point of reference my wife had a double discectomy last year. $80-something thousand for 36 hours in the hospital. That's not to speak of nearly 2 months off work, the pre-post op visits, prescriptions, changing part of the house around for her to live in that time, I could go on and on. Plus she was lucky and made a full recovery in 4 months. Not always the outcome.

While in many ways our throwaway society is vexing, I think this example proves it is preferable to a permanent injury in the case of how a vehicle is built.

Also probably due in part to lots of two lane highways and a slightly higher speed limit at 75-80 MPH most places I've been.

Must be nice having gone through life without ever having made a mistake. Since I've been quoting movies... "Nice shooting, Tex."

Ouch. What an absolute bummer. I wonder how often insurance companies subpoena cell phone records in incidents like this. Since she was completely illegal to be on the road, the only way to seek recovery from her is to take her through the courts. I suspect your insurance company may do just that. Hopefully all will work out for you.

I spent a fair amount of time in 2018 and 2019 in Europe, mostly in Germany. Loved driving on the Autobahn. Saw the worst accident in my life on the Autobahn, actually. Guy in a big Audi wagon was absolutely flying down the left lane somewhere east of Frankfurt. I was doing about 200 kmh, and he passed me like I was standing still. Up ahead, someone in my lane (middle) decided to pass the guy in front of him, put on his lane change indicator, slid over...right in front of the flying Audi. The car previously in front of me went briefly airborne and to the right, clipping the car he was passing, which spun out. The back end of the wagon went up about 45 degrees, slammed back down, entire car made an immediate 90 degree right turn, crossed all the lanes, hit the side of a car in the far right lane and pushed it up the embankment. There was debris everywhere. I picked my way through and continued on.

When I arrived at my hotel, I was having a drink in the lobby bar and told this story to the bartender. He explained to me, in Germany, you have a legal obligation to stop and render assistance and wait for authorities when you witness an accident. I had no idea.
