Mossberg 535 vs Remington 870 for Turkey Hunting

Looking for a turkey gun, liked the 535 because theres a combo package that comes with a slug barrell as well. Have heard good things about both guns. I have read that this could be argued forever, but ready to pull the trigger on one. As far as affordability, these are about my range.

I like the Mossberg better. The remington is probably a more solid design, if you plan on shooting thousands and thousands of rounds. A turkey gun is going to get carried alot and shot a little. The cost of the 870 isn't worth it to me. I plan to get a 535 this winter, but I want the Tactical Turkey.

 

There is a reason the Mossberg comes with 2 barrel and is cheaper than the 870. I personally prefer the Remington. I have 2 870's an older 20ga. and a newer 12 ga. 3 1/2" supermag in realtree camo for turkey. I love my turkey gun and couldn't think of another shotgun I would rather have on my shoulder when I see ol'tom strutting in. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

 

I have the 835 ultra mag and 870 and like them both but I like my beneli super black eagle II the best

 

I'm going on saturday to try a few on and see how they feel. I'm still undecided. My pops says to get the 870. He had one for years and years.

I do have the mossberg 500 tactical for home defense but don't plan on having it out in the elements like this gun would be.

If anyone else has opinions please let me know.

 

never shot the moss but i have an 870 for a turkey gun and it does what its supposed to. Im pretty sure the 870 has been around longer so it should be easier to find aftermarket parts such as chokes and barrels. But then again neither should be hard... I would say go throw em both up to the shoulder and you will know then.

 

FWIW - I have a Mossberg 500 with a 20" barrel (turkey) and a rifled slug barrel. Awesome shotgun and very accurate! I've killed many turkey and deer with this gun. My suggestion would be to shoulder both and see what feels most comfortable. Whatever choice, you can't go wrong!

 

I love my mossberg 835. The thumbhole stock is really nice too.

 

I love my Mossberg 535. I got the thumbhole edition w/ the shorter 20" barrel (the combo you are looking at has a 22" barrel). It is a joy to carry on long hunts (it is very light) and it shoots unbelievably tight patterns at 55+ yards with 3.5" heavy shot #5's and the Briley Turkey choke I have on it. My old Mossberg 500 gave me 15 years of trouble free service (and was still working perfectly when I sold it last year) and I am sure my 535 will do the same.

 

If you haven't already decided, heres my two cents. If you have I'm sure you will be happy either way.

Personal preference I'm sure, but there are some distinct differences. The most significant to me is the safety, just doesn't feel right for a shotgun safety to be on top.

If I had my druthers I would take an 870 every time, of course my first shotgun was a 20ga 870 wingmaster when I was 7.

A friend of mine had the 500 when growing up and I always remember how "loose" it felt compared to my 870. I'm sure things have been improved, but then he couldn't have paid me to trade for that 500. Today that 500 is sitting in some closet somewhere probably rusting, while my old 870 is being used by that very same friends son.

Also if it makes a difference, I don't hunt turkey, but rather waterfowl and upland.

 

I've shot Mossberg's and own 870s. Either will be sufficient but when it comes to pump shotguns, I don't think you can beat the remington in terms of value and dependability.

 

Between the two, I'd go with the 870. Now, it would be a harder choice if you were looking at a Mossy 835 Ulti Mag. The 835 is over bored and is a hell of a turkey gun. I've got an old 870 Express and used it to hunt turkeys for years, but it has a 28" barrel and was a pain to carry in the turkey woods. For a little more than it would have cost me for a shorter barrel, I picked up a used 835 off of my friend with a 20" barrel, sims recoil pad, a pure gold choke PLUS a rifled barrel with a Nikon scope. I was probably with him for every round he shot through it, but he just had to have a benelli... Anyway, if you go Mossberg, look at the 835. It would probably be a better turkey gun than the 500.

 

Still havent made up my mind. Ive went and held all of the guns above. I feel like the mossbergs are just a little heavier. I dunno, Im still confused.

The Mossys shoot well, but I'd rather have the Remington. That being said, my turkey gun is a Winchester 1300 Speed Pump in the National Wild Turkey Federation dress, with a Jelly Head choke tube and a Tru-Glo halo red dot sight.

 

Shot my 870supermag the other day using Winchester 3 1/2" #5 shot and my new Comp-N-Choke XXX full choke tube at some turkey targets and they were pretty impressive. Not that I am a great shot or anything but the pattern that the choke holds is pretty awesome.

 

I finally got around to ordering one of these today



I fondled the 870 and others, but the adjustable stock of the Mossy really made my mind up.

 

I have both a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870 and honestly it's six of this and half a dozen of that. They are both great guns and are well worth the price compared to what you'd pay for a Benelli, Beretta, etc.
