I have a new 2022 Tacoma 4 cylinder 6 speed automatic. 1700 miles on it. Driving from Dallas to Fort Worth back and forth using cruise control the constant shifting it annoying. I've tried all the transmission settings and still it doesn't help.

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done at the moment:

The stock AT tuning is pretty bad and there are no Toyota TSBs that can help.

Good information. Thank you. I'll wait for an updated TSB.

Yesteryear’s 4 banger in A heavy brick trying to keep up with today’s freeway speeds, is going to do that. Hell the V6 is still having to shift at times, this truck is horrible in the aero department.

    You're welcome.

But, just a note that there has been only one known powertrain TSB for the 2.7l Tacos since the 3rd Gen launch. Even on the 3.5l side, things have gotten very quiet when we know that there are missing updates for the 2016 through 2018 ATs. Just ridiculous lack of support and fixes for this from the Toyota side of things.

Welcome to Tacoma World, neighbor! You'll get used to that shifting eventually. Thankfully this state is pretty damn flat, so you won't hear it constantly.

Sorry for the slight disagreement, but the transmissions and engines for the 3rd Gens are excellent hardware. It is purely a crappy programming issue.

    few things here and there.

Been this way since 2016 with the AT’s

Tunes help, but nothing completely fixes it. Sadly..

the good news is that it’s not necessarily a problem, just more of an annoyance.

I want to agree with you but man, the fact that behind the company is Lexus….

The level at which they went to produce some of those vehicles just shames me they
can’t get tuning up to speed…. I’ve only owned one Lexus but driven many in my career
and never would they have put up with this.

Crap, wife and I had a rental 2019 RAV4 in Utah and Arizona and I was shocked when she commented what was wrong with the auto, and she IS NOT a car person! Lol…

What ever happened to the Genius Guy and his transmission modules for the 3rd Gens?

    few things here and there.

I agree in full. Toyota’s TSB’s aren’t super helpful, and the company is unwilling to admit there is a problem. A tech at my local dealer had the nerve to say he has never heard of a single complaint on the AT. Like really?? I don’t know a single 3rd gen AT owner that doesn’t complain about it.

Some say what we are complaining about is it working “as expected” which, again, are you serious? I understand fuel economy, but if this is the final outcome, there are so many better alternative solutions to achieve that. If an F150 can get better FE, is a bigger truck, so can we.. if it was engineered better.

It doesn’t take an expert to drive a car : truck and understand what is smooth, what is not. What feels normal, what feels atypical. The AT and engine pairing was mistake number one. Mapping was probably done to the best of their abilities, but I’m unsure if I can believe that either. Shit, tuners can remap and make the truck feel like a whole other truck. I think it’s just a piss-poor excuse.

At the end of the day, the AT will get the job done, it’s just one of the worst driving experiences in a modern vehicle IMHO.

While it may be too late to fix the hardware that’s out there now, without a mass recall, let’s hope they get it right with Gen 4.

Look, I know it’s easy to complain about it.. it is what it is, I just wish they’d have at least owned it, made a change earlier rather than later. They knew the trucks would sell regardless. The only time change will occur is when it hits them where it counts, in their wallets.

So true, they were owning a 2015 I don’t mean any hurt against third generations but wouldn’t it be funny if they get things right with the fourth and then the value of the 3rd Gens on the used car lot start to go down if they’ve got the automatic and that got circulated….

Anyone have connections to Chinese/Russians with good Facebook/IG skills?

We could make it happen… Once it “trends” lol…

Wow, I feel for all y'all Gen 3 automatic Tacoma owners; my 2022 Tacoma has a manual transmission and is easily the smoothest and most pleasant truck I've ever driven.

Hopefully some of the aftermarket tunes can help y'all out.

From my limited looking around, it seems that the 3rd Gen Tundras are driving well with the Stock tune and the 3.5l TT and 10spd AT. With that, the 2nd Gen Tundras are still holding their value. For different reasons, of course, but I expect the same with the 3rd Gen Tacos.

If yours is a 4cylinder, take it out of cruise control and mash the skinny pedal, that should help.

Normally I would bash on the tranny with everyone else, but you are driving inside the metroplex, dude. There is no room to run cruise control here.

The constant shifting is the PCS sensor working overtime to adjust to traffic. Turn off CC and drive the old fashioned way.

Ok fair enough, but it makes the tranny suk! I am a Tacoma fan, I bought the truck knowing about this issue...
Until Toyota tunes out the issue, it suks!!

Is there any reason to think Toyota will address this issue? After reading all of the threads on the shift quality of the automatic transmissions dating back to 2016, my gut tells me there will not be a fix from the manufacturer; your only real option is an aftermarket tune.
