Why do you need an inverter?

Depends on what I’m powering. Generally never need one here, everything I care about is DC.

And lots of things that used to require ac can be done more efficiently on dc. Laptops for example

This is why I asked. It seems so many people have been sold on and have bought into the idea that inverters are a must.

They make coffee makers, blenders, microwaves and just about every other appliance in 12v.
I have, can't remember the name of it,I use it to power the laptop, and sometimes a submersible pump where I don't have power to drain water.

The factory one with two outlets added to the side of the center console. I used them primarily to charge camera batteries before the 12V chargers were common. I used to use them to power a netbook that I used for maps and I've also used them to run and charge my laptop (I think most gaming laptops still charge at more than 12V- my current MSI is 19.5V and under load will trip the factory inverter even in 400w mode; I did the 400w all the time mod on it). When I first got my fridge I just had a marine battery lashed in the back without a charger so I'd run the fridge on the bed outlet then let it automatically switch to the battery when I shut the truck off so that it helped save the battery- obviously the solution was to add a 12v outlet in the rear along with a way to recharge the house battery while driving.

Xantrex ProWatt 1000 Pure Sine Wave inverter. Just make sure you have a breaker between the battery and your inverter with an interrupt capacity at or better than the inverter. I have a blue sea 185 series for my inverter. If you are powering your laptop, ipad, gps, or other sensitive devices a true sine wave inverter is the way to go.

Edit: I recommend only buying an inverter with an integrated GFCI circuit; they're more expensive but if you have the proper breaker on the supply side and the output side is a GFCI protected circuit you'll be golden and your electronics will be safe. A new iPhone is ~900 bucks so consider the cost of what you are powering before you skimp on the device generating the AC to charge it.

Question is How many power inverter will you be buying? How often will it be use? Any expensive computers?

I vote buy the Sine wave. Offer 100% protection, vs 90% on the modified.

I use my Sine wave every day, I lived off the grid, I use a deep cycle battery to my inverter. To recharge and power my iPad and cell phones.

Most times this is a one time purchase, but I use mines a lot and this is my second one.

I use a Kreiger and it works great. I never come anywhere close to its capacity. You can find them on ebay open box for 50 bucks. They were recommended by Will Prowse who is a solar power cult leader

I use it more for tailgating for my kids hockey games than for camping but it works great for keeping the TV running.

Great you like this inverter. It didn’t mention it was a sine wave inverter, a a little bit concern here.

I only use mines mainly for recharging and keep charging on my IPad ,cell phones and a portable fan for those hot days.
I found the USB ports comes in handy. It is always in the on position.
To run my plugs it has a separate on and off switch with a small green light to let me know it is ON. and when the battery runs low, it gives a annoying beeping “sound”.

To run two USB ports I got a dual USB extension.
