I had no intention of messing with rusted 26 year old bolts and corroded fuel lines, wrestling with a damn fuel filter behind the front tire (or underneath the frame). So I took it to my local shop because it's worth it to me to have them snap the bolts and break the fuel line.

They called me an hour later to say MY TRUCK HAS NO FUEL FILTER (except for the screen inside the gas tank).

Anyone want to tell me why some 1996 2.4 Tacomas have a filter while others don't?

It’s probably under the intake manifold on the drivers side.

They told me they traced the line all the way back to the tank...and they told me they already bought a filter for it...and you know they wanted to charge me to change it. So I'm saying no filter based on that.

Wouldn’t hurt to have them double check.

Take it somewhere else, they obviously don't know how to find a fuel filter. I wouldn't trust them to do the work properly.

These trucks with these engines most definitely have a fuel filter, I’ve changed it myself. It’s under the intake manifold on the block. VERY hard to see it.

The only way it wouldn’t have one is if a past owner removed it and bypassed it. Unlikely.

Thank you. I bet the shop lied to me because they did not want to attempt to do all the work to change it

Turns out I was wrong. They just didn't want to mess with removing the filter.

It is such a pain in the but job that relocated it to under brake fluid resivour , made it much easier to change it after that.
