Wierd problem while filling up with gas

I experienced -20F once. Once!!!!

 

It's also unnecessary - even in very cold weather. Your cab won't cool off to uncomfortable in the few minutes it takes to pump 10 gallons of gas.

Context - I live in North Wisconsin on a big lake. Like one of the 5 largest in the US. We get cold - it never gets that cold. You know the damn weather, dress for it.

 

Came in for gas problem, told to put coat on. Happy Friday folks

 

How is filling up with the truck running dangerous?

 

I never fill truck while running it is only common sense man. Most gas stations say it at the pumps do not leave vehicle running while filling, fire hazard.

 

Lots of people believe this but can anyone explain why it is a fire hazard? What about a running vehicle is more likely to ignite gasoline that is being transferred into the tank, the small amount of vapors that is lost to the atmosphere, or even an accidental spill?

 

Why does this have to be explained to you? Pretty sure it's clearly posted to shut off vehicle when fueling on every gas pump on the fucking planet.

My suggestion would be fill your truck while it's running, then get a couple of 5 gallon cans and fill those with fuel while they are in the bed of your truck, all while wearing a wool sweater and rubbing the sleeve vigorously.

I am especially annoyed when people get back in the vehicle with the pump running. I don't trust my pump, now I have to watch yours cause you can't stand the cold or wanna play with your phone. GFY.

 

That is incorrect. The Tacoma only performs the EVAP leak test after the truck has been off for several hours. And the ECU sees predetermined conditions. Go out to your garage after 4-5 hours and you will hear a pumping noise coming from your truck. That's the EVAP test running.

 

Well you keep filling it up and see when you fucking blow yourself up when a spark hits or the next moron behind or ahead is still smoking his cigarette while filling. Common sense no explanation required.

It also says not to use your cell phone at the pump. I've left my car running for 20+ years while getting gas. I don't see how a running car posses any more risk than a hot one turned off.

The most likely spark you're going to get it from static from getting in and out of the car. Better not do that either.

 

Yes, it's rare, but it does happen. The fact that you've gotten away with it for 20 years doesn't mean that one day the law of averages won't catch up with you. Which is ok if you were the only one affected, pay to play. But most likely you will affect someone else who does things right, and that's not ok.

Heat the filler neck opening with a torch, to clean up the deposits that are keeping the gas cap from sealing.

ONLY do this on a Friday.
