I mistakenly posted this in the first generation forum earlier but can anybody cite any actual information as to why the transmission cooler was removed from the models of the last few years?

There are still two other coolers / heaters installed (a cooler near the AT itself and a heater / cooler in the rad tank). Toyota eliminated the one ahead of the rad mid-way through 2019, I think. They said that it wasn't needed.

It is supposedly cheap and easy to add back in as the bungs are in the radiator, I believe.

Mostly cost I'm sure, maybe in combination with parts shortages. Them air cooler was pretty tiny anyway. Your truck still has the internal radiator trans cooler and a fluid heat exchanger at the trans thermostat.

Interesting. Seems like I’ll add it sometime soon.

Everything still works, it still cools, my 21 is just as good as my 17 was.

Any idea if this amount is sufficient for lengthy runs of wheeling at low speeds?

You should get a scanguage and monitor your temps durning some test runs and decide that one for yourself, I use a scangauge 2 to monitor my pan and TC temps.

The best way to know is to monitor your AT temps. I believe there are two or three PIDs that can be seen.

Folks have noted their temps getting up there while towing / wheeling. Both before and after the rad removal. Some folks suggest that pinning the AT T-stat open helps a lot?

I've worked out that pinning the Thermostat slows down the heat build-up, but it doesn't increase cooling capacity. If your doing something that makes more heat then the system can handle it will over heat eventually. With it pinned open heat starts climbing to overheat from 150 or 140, but if its not the heat climbs from 180 so you hit danger levels sooner.

    Good stuff.

Thanks for clarifying that. It makes sense that the amount of fluid is limited regardless.

Strange that they would have it in the first place, if not needed. They certainly like to cut things here and there for cost savings.

The 3.5l was new in this application, as was the 6AT along with the diff ratios.

They were likely gathering data this whole time. Heck, the front diff temp sensor went away in 2019 or 2020 also.
