285 over 275 worth ?

I know this probably be beat up subject but i am about to run out to buy and really debating if its worth the change, currently i have BFG KO2 265/70/17 and want to move to mud tire and see Cooper STT Pro and i can ether stay with 265/70/17 or move to 285/70/17, any suggestions if worth moving to 285 over 265? Cooper STT Pro is not avail in 275 size thus has to go that way. below info i found on sites not sure if the gain is significant to do the swap:

62 pounds a tire and plus 21 for rims seems like heavy set, what is normal weight for tires i can only imagine 35 and up tire weigths.

PS i do offroad quite often, but ratio probably breaks down to 80 on road and 20 offroad.

 

Worth it?? What lift are you running and what wheels do you have? Worth it is very subjective.

How much extra room do you have now? Are you okay with the way the transmission shifts now? If you want them, go for it, but it seems like a slippery slope with what can be required for just a little bigger tire. Body mount chop, possible regear and who knows what else. My truck with 265 75 16s can barely get to 6th on anything but a downhill or super flat stretch. All that being said, if you want them, do it.

 

thanks for good answer, i am leaning to probably stay with what i got, seems odd thouhg 275 size has very limited mud tire selections just mostly AT.

 

If you move up to a 285 you’ll more than likely need to do a cmc and trim the wells. I had to do both to fit mine. However my gas mileage improved after changing out the tires from 265/75/16 to 285/70/17

thats interesting, i am thinking going from AT to mud and more agressive look, and for offroad performance, but really for last 3 years i managed to do all trails on 265/70/17 with no issues and wonder if i should just stay with. seems vendors want to go ether 265 or 285, 275 seems not to popular for mud stuff.

 

Is fuel economy a consideration?

Depending on where you're at: Skinny is better on packed snow/ice. Wide is better on sand, mud, deep snow (when you air down).

 

economy is nice to have but i am realistic about it, so i dont expect 20mpg. as far as trail, 90 my trails is sand and rocks, snow is minimal

 

This is stock on my sr5 and I can get to 6th at 45mph in less than 5 seconds. Could you elaborate on what causes the performance drain? Is it the tread spacing? Is it the weight of 4wd or other added features?

 

Sounds like 265 (AT no less) has served you well and the 285 is purely for aesthetics. As others have said, be prepared to head down an pricy rabbit hole for ~¾" more rubber.

 

Have you ever driven mud tires on pavement for a couple of years? Your 80% on road might not be enjoyable after a bit.

You get where you want to go with what you have. A slight size change isn't going to increase capability enough to offset the cost and complications IMHO

but then again, I believe:

- 16” is the correct size wheel for these trucks if going off road…
- skinny pizza cutters are under rated
- staying at 265 75 16 works great with the taco performance-wise
- In not looking at anything on instagram


what do I know Baja and Oz are fully paved… no speed bumps like at the malls…

 

When you're getting in it, and you don't mind bouncing around, go 31". If you get in it and want to be large and in charge, go 33" or bigger.

I was debating the heavy c or E rated 275s and even the 255/75s but the weight is too much. So I went from 265/70/17 Toyo at2s now on my 99 4runnner to 285/70/17 Toyo At3s. No rubbing on cab mounts as I have the SEMA 4runner wheels. I tried some flexing on some steep inclines and I have a slight rub on the pass side mud guard. I found out I didn't have the bottom bolt so I lengthened the hole and move the guard back 1/4 inch and problem solved. For my beach riding is all I will do I'm good. It might rub more if I were to do some heavy off roading but that won't happen. Getting the calibration done and the kdmax pro xt tune kept me from feeling a power loss. Love the ride and the way it looks.
