How long does that lowering take? 30 seconds ? 1 min? A defender I had, had it, as well as an X5... never really thought it was necessary mostly a gimmick, including for my midget wife of 5'.
Yea level 1 is garbage. But Level 2 at home and at work is perfect. You get about 5-8kw per hr... so about 15-25miles per hr charged. Depending on vehicle/consumption

My wife's company has chargers at work. Yes, they will get busier as more and more people get EV's, but right now they are sitting unused. Free charging? Yes please. Depending on timing of our R1S delivery and how busy her chargers are at work, I might not even put a L2 charger in the garage. Ha!

It takes about ten seconds to lower.

I wouldn’t call level 1 garbage, it has its place for use when the vehicle can be left sitting for an extended period. Work parking lots are perfect for that implementation.

We have some L2 chargers as well at work. Not free by any means and employees have been fired from unauthorized charging their EVs (some higher level) from unmetered outlets.

I will most likely install a L2 charger I’m my garage for resale. It’s not that expensive (and I can do it myself) and we have no plans of purchasing an EV anytime soon.
However, with the current fuel supply status…that could change peoples minds.

During the winter months, I have fuel in hand…and you know how nasty the weather can get north of Woodman.

That's just dumb for those employees. You think the company won't notice? lol
Yah hers are just an employee benefit. Plus after Covid, only like 25% of the employees are back in the office, so the parking garage (and subsequent chargers) are largely vacant.

Oh yah for sure on the weather. Yah, my friend just (in the last ~ year or so) built in Wolf Ranch and his builder had an option to wire the garage for charger(s). I was surprised he didn't do it. Much easier to do during the building process than after the fact.

1500 watts max coming into a 135kw battery would take what ? 90 hrs 0-100?
Sure charging 10% while at work for 8 hrs seems ok but it’s also a hassle.

The likelihood that someone would be charging from 0% state of charge is about 0%. I think most would be starting from a 60-70% SOC, and most likely higher. In the colder months that L1 charging will also eliminate phantom drain.

Well stupid is as stupid does…right? Some people think these rules are for everyone but them. We lose at least two employees per year from watching porn on work computers on the clock. Not surprising though. A Dist 20 middle school teacher was just fired for watching porn on lunch break (school district laptop) and accidentally shared his screen to the whole classroom of 13 year olds before they returned to class and logged in. I hope he is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

That wasn’t a good move on your friends part, but I also don’t know his financial situation. With the cost of homes now days in this city…people are forced to make small cuts when/where they can. I’m pretty sure that we could not afford my house in todays market (4 years later). I will just use my welding outlet if I build a 35x50 shop on the property and move all welding equipment over there.

Most EVs battery range is between 20-80% anyway right? (Sorry…EV ignorant but learning).

With L1 charging, it doesn’t matter where you are in your charging percentage it will always charge at the same rate. This is also true of L2. With L3, that is where you get a charging curve with the “meatier part” between 5-80%.

    E3B35036-0C30-4B77-A296-27A4E78F8A94.jpg

It’s the difference between AC charging and being limited by what the L2 charger can output and the on board charger can accept VS. DC Fast Charging, where you hear specs like “250kW” on V3 Tesla Superchargers or “350kW” on Electrify America stations. Again, you are limited by what the car (or adapter, if necessary) can accept.

Yes, but I would never arrive to work at 0%. If I left home at 80% and used 10% (13.5kw) to get to work I’d leave work back at 80% every day. That’s why level 1 is good for the workplace since the EV generally sits uninterrupted for 8ish hours a day slowly recharging what was used in the commute to work.

I would consider plugging in to be less hassle than stopping at a gas station. I spent years plugging in everyday during the six month Alaskan winters so it wouldn’t seem inconvenient to me.

I feel the need to really explain myself. And to do so with some words that many may not understand, strung together into sentences that will probably be difficult for some here to decipher.

Did you say the words that were contained within the constraints of my quotation? I don't expect reading comprehension, nor logic apparently, to go very far within this thread. Tons of people are hitting the claimed range with their R1T's: auto magazines, auto websites, forum users like we have here, etc. <--- that means "etcetera", which is used when a list does not need to be written out to include all items because they are of negligible difference and can be considered the same. These users are reporting these findings using real-world conditions. They don't control the weather, traffic controls or road conditions. Are they towing a trailer or loaded to max GVWR? No. They're just driving around their normal day to day routes doing what the rest of us do 99.9% of the time with our trucks. That you dismiss this easily accessible and widely published information so easily....I want to be surprised but alas am not. Will "your" (used loosely to imply anyone reading this, not solely Mr. Turd) mileage be impacted by packing your batwing awning, overpriced ice chest, Skottle grill & myriad GoPro cameras and accessories? Sure, maybe those 200 pounds will knock a mile or 4 off the range, just the same as it would the range of those hallowed internal combustion vehicles. God forbid a new vehicle succumb to the effects of physics when 'ol faithful in your (used loosely, again, to imply anyone reading this) driveway seems to somehow be exempt from them. I'll say it again for the people in the back: if you just don't like the truck then be an adult and say so; don't try to pick apart specifications & figures using illogical arguments.

Wait. If logic escapes the lion share of naysayers on this thread then how can I expect them to use logical arguments? I just divided by 0.

I work for a national roadside assistance club and we have free employee L2 charging at the headquarter office. Pre-Covid there were approx 3,500 employees reporting daily. We've got 4 charging stalls and each employee gets 2 hours on their plug. Sign-ups are the business day prior and if you're not at the security desk by 9am to sign up you don't get a spot between 8a-6p the following day. Only about 5% of EV drivers at our office don't bother with it, otherwise the rest of us are all very appreciative of the free juice. My Volt only gets 10mph on L2 but after my 2 hours I've recovered my commute and can leave work at 100% SOC. To think it's not an amazing employee benefit is naive. Like someone said, would you scoff at your employer giving you a gallon or 2 of free gas every day? Even L1 would be appreciated if it were a spot you could camp at all day, my car can get 4mph on 110v so an 8 hour shift would actually be more than I'd need. Installing the chargers is a write-off for the property owner, and sometimes they even make money depending on the incentives. When there's 100% adoption of EV (pause for a few certain people's heads to explode) things will look a lot different in parking lots but we're decades from that happening.

I'll drive an EV when I get free charging at work, along with doubling my salary double my vacation time, and a 10% pay increase annually.
