Would you reshim this or leave as-is? Valve clearances.

    This is all I needed to read to never check mine. Haha, kidding. I’m at like 166k, so I hope it keeps running as buttery smooth as it does now for several more years.

    If you keep clean oil in it.....you can get 300k out of the 4-banger oem heads on original shims...
    oem shims have amazing life.....best in automotive industry......

    By 300K a Honda would need 5 mandatory adjustments......

    This is one place toyota did it right.....

    As the valve wears....seats deeper.......necessitating a thinner and thinner shim....
    if you reach thinnest shim......then next is a new head......or a job......valves/seats......

    Yota did it like the motorcycle icons.....as the valve seats a little....the shim shaves a little over time....plus over a very long period of time the valve end slowly hammers/wallows other side of the bucket.......compensating....freakin genius.....

    Unless you run dirty oil...........
    ..........and now you can picture exactly what accelerated wear does....and where.....



    Valve spacing does nothing for performance.....
    its all about timing......crude but true.....one step up from fred flintstone......

    I agree. The oil is changed religiously at 5k so that might explain why the valve lash are all still in spec at 221k.

    Well...me being me...I couldn't leave good enough alone and went ahead and reshimmed the ones that are on the tighter end. Surprisingly, I only needed to buy one shim since I was able to mix-and-match. All of the valve lash are now the same with only three off by 0.001". It was a very tedious task and the Schley tool was a real bitch to use but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. I didn't have to modify the tool and found that the shorter end actually worked better than the longer end.

    While everything was apart, I decided to change out some of the old vacuum hoses. I failed at the ones near the firewall that is connected with a 3-way plastic union. I bought what I thought was the correct size hoses but Toyota in their infinite wisdom decided to use hoses with two different end diameters or something so the large side fit but it was too big for the other end. It was a real bitch to get to and I ended up having to reassemble everything back to the way it was essentially wasting my time and scratching up those old hoses for no reason. So a note to the wise, you might want to just buy those at the dealership or get hoses that fit the smaller end and force them onto the bigger end...not the other way around like what I did.

    Another thing that I ran into was the unopened FIPG that I bought 1.5 years ago expired by about 8 months. Apparently they only sell them with about a 7-8 month shelf life. I ran a bead on a piece of paper and left it overnight and it still seemed good but decided to just get a new one from the dealer to the tune of $23!!! I would hate to have it leak and end up pulling everything apart again.

    I replaced the valve cover gasket, valve cover washers, spark plug grommets, cam plugs, half moon, PVC, the whole nine yard with OEM parts and no more leaks. I also cleaned up the throttle body and intake plenums and replaced all gaskets.

    My fuel trims improved and they stay within -2% to 2% LTFT and the engine feels and idles better. Overall, it was super time consuming but not overall hard...4/10 in difficulty. I don't think I will ever have to redo the valve lash again given that they don't seems to move much.
