Look at his thumbnails, its constant click bait and "OMG WATCH THIS FIRST" Videos.

That said, he's earned it and I wish I had committed to broadcasting back in 2009 when it was offered lol.

 

Thanks. Unfortunately most people fall for it and go for the feel good videos that agree with their questionable beliefs.
Unlike other engineers, I usually do not question other engineers or knowledgable techs.
I really have zero faith in techs or engineers who think they are smarter than everyone.
Actually, I feel sorry for them.

 

I did 2 taco 3.5 reseals last week.



I’d rather do the fwd ones. Tacos suck to do in chassis.
The 3.5s are pretty bullet proof. The FE is a gem. Very few issues, can make good power.. that’s why I have one in my mr2

 

I tried to do one by leaving the valve covers on and sliding out the cover. Didn't work lol. I loosened the vc's off and lubed them, they still rolled.

I hate them. Right up there with 5.7 cam box.

 

Being a dealer tech I can tell you the 10k oci isn’t an issue. The cars that have issues stemming from it fall under the “severe use” category if you read the maintenance manual. Lots of stop and go driving or short trips? Toyota does recommend 5k oci. Which a lot of people fall under, but ignore. Then they start burning oil. Way less of an issue on the 2gr. More of a 1/2ar or 2zr issue

 

I don’t mind the 5.7 cam towers since I can sneak them out. But they still suck

 

All the chain tensioners are failing in my area, so sneaky method is dead in my eyes now. But warranty days for sure.

 

Yea the driver side tensioner is becoming an issue with age. Warranty jobs still get sneaky method. But obviously if the tensioners going.. yay LOT of fun to be had. Living in the rust belt makes it more fun!

 

Maybe so, but the guy is a toyota master technician who also owns a toyota, lexus, scion repair shop. I'd rather have him working on my car than most of the kids out there doing oil changes at stealerships. If he wants to make extra money being on YouTube, so be it.

 

Did he ever claim to be smarter than everyone?

 

Fellas pulling their engines to stop weeping oil leaks, then spraying their whole chassis with used motor oil to prevent rust.

Don't care for him, he said some dubious things in his 10k oci video that weren't really true. He said a vehicle maintained on (his own words) "the cheapest oil possible" and ignoring a serious oil consumption problem for thousands of miles was "impeccably maintained". Either of those would disqualify a vehicle from what I would call a minimal maintenance standard, let alone impeccable maintenance.

 

He addresses the 'engineer vs mechanic' aspect in his oil consumption video. He ultimately defers to the manual/engineers and encourages viewers to "dig deep into the manual". He assumes most fall under special conditions. The manual uses the the word "primarily" to qualify the need for special condition 5K OCIs. He contradicts his conclusion earlier in the video by stating operating under special conditions even just a couple times qualifies the need.
I'll weigh what "experienced hands' have to say, but....he's just all over the place. I'd rather see more data and less rethoric. He might mean well...

Modern spec'd oil has no problem going 10K OCI... If it's conuming oil or will eventually consume oil, it's a design/production problem, not a maintenance problem. 5K OCI will not negate it.

 

Basically this thread. Great video though, I'd trust this dude with my kids.

 

And because of this it means he’s always wrong and misleading his subscribers? WOW.
