Whatever tire you get make sure it's at least "3 peak mountain symbol" certified. I have used plenty of AT tires that were useless in snow.

Pull up on the winch move the truck as much as you can do it again until you have traction. Tractor works pretty good too.

Let’s see if this more what you’re looking for OP…

    TRD OR manual trans:

Option 1. 4Hi engaged with traction control turned off (button on dash to the left of steering wheel). These settings along with the combination of your experience/instincts to determine approach and speed will work most of the time to keep you moving.

Option 2: 4Lo with ATRAC engaged (button on ceiling near sunglasses holder). You do also have the option of engaging the rear locker (button next to ATRAC) but as someone else mentioned earlier, depending on the situation this doesn’t always help. Both of these functions are only available for use in 4Lo.

If you’re already stuck and have lost traction the extra torque provided by 4Lo won’t really do much. This is where having traction boards and a shovel come in handy. Properly placed traction boards with 4Lo will help you dig out of the ruts you’re in and you can reassess from there. Obviously you also already have a winch too and can deploy that when/if necessary.

Long term, slope back the crests on either side of the deactivation, don't fill it in. Working in the bush in BC (you said km/h), I find it very odd that a road accessing private property is deactivated but you did say that is another long story.

Is the road wide enough to approach the crossing at an angle? As others have said, better tires, if you live down a logging road you know you need better tires in the Spring and Fall. You were on the right path, 4L, engage the locker and let it crawl.

I have been fighting Forestry 2 years about the deactivation. So far, nothing but the run around.

When you go between D and R in 4wd to rock your way out of something, be mindful that it’s pretty easy to damage your transfer case if you shift between the 2 too fast and/or give it too much gas while making those fast shifts between forward and reverse. I grew up in the mountains and snow I’ve witnessed several peope grenade their t-cases doing this.

Hey old guy @suomiM31. Not knowing what model you have, (not sure if you have 4low and rear locker), would have given you the best chance. A snow tire may not necessarily help in the rough stuff, especially if bottoming out. A taller, better A/T tire with 3 peak snow designation will give you better traction and a bit more ground clearance.

Bottom line, is your Taco did get you out, so congrats on that!

If in BC, you probably already know, forest tenure roads are the responsibility of the logging company that built them and they have to deactivate them. Roads for private land usually fall under MOT and are maintained by the local highways contractor even if they are called FSR.

I know several places where the classification changes at the last private driveway. All the best with the battle.

As someone who works in the bush, I'll second the Duatracs...... Next time you need to replace tires.

    I am
I am in B.C. and the road has gone from FSR to Wilderness Road back to FSR (When they started logging again) and now to deactivated. They know about the private property because they notified me about the logging. From what I can see Forestry and logging companies do whatever they feel like.
