Dallas’s old truck. Decided it’s fate. Partout a lot of shit. Toss stock suspension off the 95 on it (minus leaf packs) and cut the roof off and make a cage, make a flat bed and use it for moving shit around the farm for now

I love when I have screws and the correct tap, and didn’t have to make another trip out.

Hi all. I'm looking at buying a 2003 TRD 2wd ACLB for my son from a family friend (one owner never abused) . The truck has 88K and seems to run well. Smooth shifts, sounds good, temp stays normal and its pretty darn clean. Any of you 1st gen owners (2003 specifically) have any good advice/experience with this year. Was it a good year? I'm having my life long mechanic friend do an inspection next week (it will need valve cover gaskets I'm sure, its pretty leaky and wet around them) but just thought I'd check if you knew any other major issues with the 03. Thanks all. TbT

Man, new wipers on a new windshield on a rainy day are completely silent.

Just treat the purchase like you would any other used vehicle.

Rust is something to check for any first gen otherwise you won't really get a response any different than you would for other vehicles.

Nice. Gotta love seeing guys trade their 1st gens in on a 3rd gen. Rather than keeping them or doing a private sale…

AFAIK 2003 was a great year for the Tacoma; in fact it might be the most desirable since it's the newest one that still has a cable operated throttle body (at least in the V6). Try to poke your fingers inside the frame holes. If you feel any flaking or rust chips, I'd walk away, or at least talk them down substantially. I think you should be ok as long as the truck was never in a salt state though.

If you can, maybe jack it up and check the LBJs for play, and also examine the steering rack for leaks and/or worn bushings. Those parts tend to wear out quicker on the front end. Oh yea and check the leaf springs and just around the truck in general for cracks and metal fatigue. Try not to get one that was wheeled hard.

For extra piece of mind, pressure test the cooling system and do a compression test, and verify oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, perhaps as part of a PPI at a shop.
