Never owned a Tacoma but hear good things and looking to buy something dependable. Found a 2009 prerunner double cab with 4.0 automatic with 170k and they want $13,000. Went and looked while they were closed and the frame looks great only seen a small leak where the driveshaft goes in the tranny.

Since you guys have experience with these trucks I'm looking for your opinion on if this is something to buy or pass on ‍♂️ thanks in advance

170,000 is a lot of miles. Not necessarily a bad thing, but there’s a lot of maintenance that should have happened by now that I’d like to see some proof of before I forked over that much money for it.

I used Washington DC because I dunno where you are.

Offer them 14.4, no haggling, and they might take it. Otherwise, it's just "an" truck, nothing special. If you don't need it, then you don't need it and you can find the next deal.

    upload_2022-11-7_13-43-34.jpg

Edit: Abort mission - don't offer over asking, that's dumb. I thought it said 16. I'd take 13, but offer 12 and see what happens.

170,000 miles doesn't scare me. My 07 is at 230,000 and I fully expect at least another 100,000 before any major parts replacement. I've basically just drove mine. Other than fluids, tires, brakes, and batteries the only other part I've replaced is the alternator. But $13,000 seems high for a 2wd truck. Closer to $10,000 seems right. I'd pay that if it were 4X4.

o_O because I'm an idiot and thought it was 16....

Yeah, offer them 12 and see what happens then.

Where are you located? Id rather have 4x4 and never need it, than get 2wd and get stuck. Even if you're only driving on the road. Snow is different in 2wd

Would like to have 4x4 was eyeing a 2013 and it sold before I could even go look at it. Most of my driving is city but do some fishing and stuff where it would definitely be nice 8f just for peace of mind. Haven't been able to find a 4x4 in my area and price range lately

Tell them you have a few 4x4 Tacoma options, reasonably priced around the same as they’re asking, shoot for 10.5, 11 tops, fudge it my friend. It’s only a white lie, what do you have to lose.
Be like “look, for what you’re asking I can go 4x4, most I can do is 10.5, (hard no then push to 11) for a 2wheel drive.”
Can always come back and say, okay they sold, let’s make a deal at 12
    Best of luck!

Oh, and check that frame for rust!!! Post us some pics if it’s questionable or sketchy, and we’ll let you know if it’s safe or not.
If it’s Swiss cheese, hard pass and keep looking!

Edit, frame looks great, just saw that, never mind.

Went and looked under it yesterday while they were closed and frame looks immaculate... No real rust of any kind

Show up with a cashiers check for 11 or 11.5 and stick to your guns on the 4x4 options, if you walk I bet they call you in a day or so. Even if you get stuck with 13, it’s not the end of the world, prerunners are hella capable as well as reliable, but I bet they are willing negotiate, even if it’s a little.
