(Solved water pump clankin) 01 supercharged 3.4 engine noises diagnosis help.

01 3.4 supercharged

Ive got some noises coming from the engine bay, sounds like it’s coming from the valve area, not the supercharger (just had it fully rebuilt about 15k miles ago.

Any chance anyone recognizes the noise? Is it noisy valves needing adjustments? Or something else? Thanks in advance for any input!

Sounds almost like the rotors are hitting inside supercharger. Defiantly not a valve train noise. Take supercharger belt off and start it. See if noise goes away.

 

Get an engine stethoscope and see where the sound is coming from,
Check the fan bracket bearing.
AND DONT drive it
Who did the rebuild? And how long ago?

 

Fan blade tight?

 

Will definitely try that out and report back but honestly it sounds like it’s coming from far beneath the supercharger, the video its hard to tell that though

 

I have a long screwdriver I’ll have to make do with. I’ll check the fan out but it sounds like the sound comes from under the charger in person.

Jon bond did the full rebuild sent the whole thing out to them. In between 15k and 20k miles ago without pulling out the paper work to look.

If Jon Bond did the rebuild your in good hands and probably is something else or will be under warranty.

it’s amazing sometimes how a metal noise, bearing noise can travel and get thrown off where the sound is coming from.

the 5.00 Stethoscope will definitely help you narrow it down,
Fan bracket bearing is down under there,
Check all the bearings in the front of the engine,
Alternator,
Ac,
Ac idler pulley,
Power steering,
Etc

 

I am driving it now because after checking I'm pretty confident the noise is not coming from the supercharger.

Now after driving and listening for it, it almost sounds like it is coming from my transmission. its an auto transmission which im not very familiar with.

seem like the noise either happens at idle, or, when I am accelerating and the truck shifts then I let off the gas, it makes the noise. its hard to capture on video while driving.

still need to get a stethoscope and check all the pulleys

 

I don’t about automatic trans but usually I hear that the flex plate goes bad

 

sounds like you need to pull supercharger off and sell it to me. That will fix it

 

check the trans converter bolts for tightness. There's an inspection plate to access them were trans meets oil pan.

 

Well, it turns out the sound was the water pump clankin around, i discovered that after a coolant leak sprung on the water pump housing.

Another thing fixed

 

Turned out to be the water pump making all that noise… not what I expected for sure

 

Fresh rebuild, did they use the old pump?

 

ya I got all oem new parts installed for the kit.

Possibly when the last time the timing belt was done which was about 100k miles ago by the PO, maybe they didn't have the water pump done?

not sure, but that horrendous noise is now completely gone, and I just have one more odd noise on light acceleration that almost sounds like a transmission noise, but I still haven't spent much time digging into that. But the noise from the video under the hood is gone now
