Yup that certification thing can be a $$$ racket. I'd rather fair trade/fair wages first.

I know I know necroing an old thread, but damn this just happened to me this morning. Sitting in the parking lot with my daughter after getting her braces on and it just wouldn't go.

Slight panic set in, couldn't go forward but could do reverse. After a few tries of backing up, pumping the breaks, and resetting the e brake, and kicking the tires (moreso out of frustration) I looked it up and this was the first thread that popped up.

The OPs initial post worked like a charm. Guess I'm going to be working on the drums but I've got a feeling my leaking rear seals play a huge roll in this.

Trick right now is to ONLY park where you can back out...Reverse, SLAM on the brakes...it should auto adjust and loosen...
I got mine "Fixed" (band aids) and it's still iffy in the cold

Also check parking brake cables, they get dirt and water inside and seize up

Well it is doing it again. Not unsticking this time. Cable is pretty dirty but it is moving.

My rear seals are leaking and have been for a while but it was minor so wasn't too worried about them, but the rear driver side is leaking pretty good now.

Going to keep playing with the cable and see if I can get the brakes to release but we'll see how it goes.

I saw your post initially and I checked this spot this afternoon. It is clean around it and looks in good condition but I'm going to take it in next week to have the rear seals fixed and the mechanic said he'll take a look at this as well.

If I give it enough gas it goes but every time I stop at a light or stop sign it feels super tight but it's ok when it's driving. Trying not to drive it but had an appointment this afternoon.

When I get done here it's going home and staying parked until I can get it fixed.

So spent the day under the truck. The rear axle seals have just leaked so much oil it looks like the shoes and drums are getting stuck together.

Tentatively scheduled an appointment with a local mechanic later this week to get a quote on doing the seals and rear brakes.

I can do the rear brakes but I guess is it worth doing them and driving for a couple days before I take it in? It's my DD so while I do have the option to work from home I do still need to take the kids to school. Guess I can rent a car for a couple days if it's not good to drive with the sticky shoes and drums or replacing them before fixing the seals.

This fixed mine. I tried moving in reverse with e-brake on, no joy. 2019 MT.

I experienced this issue last night (11/28/23). Temp was 22 degrees. Reversed into a parking spot, e-brake applied while in “R”, shifted into “P”. Truck sat for 2.5hrs. When I attempted to drive off the truck wouldn’t go forward. I had enough room to reverse a little. Gave it a good amount of throttle to get out of the spot. It felt like the rear brakes were engaged for the 6mi drive home. The drive to work in the morning seemed fine. I disassembled the rear brakes and cleaned and inspected everything. 92k on the truck and everything looked good. I put some Tribolube on the metal to metal parts. Operated the e-brake with no issues.

Examine where the emergency brake connects to your rear drums and look for the broken aluminum connectors. After an eight month back order I finally received the factory brake lines and replace them and it fixed the problem https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IwIMG4jfnkY

Thank you for the recommendation TFR. I inspected the cables from cab entry to the end of the cable and everything checked out.

my ebrake cables at the drum end are corroded and malfunctional....What is the length of the two little 10mm hex head bolts that got into the crappy pot metal? (they snap when you try to remove them from the backing plate)

I actually didn’t have to remove the cables. I just disassembled the drum and cleaned everything well. Lubed up the metal to metal components and everything has been fine.

This has been happening to me for the past 2 years. Usually after a rain and I let the truck sit for a few days. I'm usually able to free it rocking back and forth or giving it gas in reverse then slamming on the brakes. Sometimes I can hammer on the back of the drum while wiggling the cable and it frees. It's only the passenger side.

Today before work it is STUCK! I was able to get it freed and then it locked up again in the driveway when I had to switch from R to D.
I think I finally need to replace my brake cables per other's experience on this thread - DOES ANYONE HAVE A GOOD VIDEO TO DO THIS? @TreeFortRichard @stayalert Looks like you guys replaced your cables, I'm next and would greatly appreciate any advice.
