This weekend we traded pickups for a 2022 Tacoma Trail Edition my wife has a 2021 Trail Edition 4runner and there are some interesting differences.

    1) the T4R has has push button start while the Tacoma has just regular key start

    2) the T4R has far better headlights. They are quite a bit brighter and seem to have more throw

    3) the Tacoma has blindspot monitoring while the T4R does not

    4) the Tacoma has a rear locking diff while the T4R does not

    5) the Tacoma has automatic headlights while the T4R does not

I am probably missing some other differences but it's interesting to see the differences considering they are both the "trail special edition" and based on the SR5.

That’s funny, I have a 2017 TRD Pro 4R, and a 2019 TRD-OR Taco. Not quite apples to apples on the trim.

    1) the Taco has has push button start while the 4R has just regular key start

    2) They both had bad halogen headlights, I swapped in some OEM 2021 headlights with LED low/halogen high and they’re much better

    3) Neither have BSM

    4) Both the 4R and Tacoma have a rear locking diff

    5) the 4R has automatic LOW headlights while the Taco does not

To add to that, Taco has auto HIGH, 4R does not. Taco has radar cruise control, the 4R does not.

Is the tech package what gets the auto headlights and and BSM or did they drop that stuff in the later years? Only wondering because my 2016 OR has that stuff.

    I like this thread.

I have a 2017 Off Road Tacoma, I am about to buy my wife a new (either 2022 or 2023 model year) 4Runner, likely Off Road model, by the end of the year. I know it will have many features that didn't exist on any 2017 model <anything>, but will still be interesting to see if my 2017 Tacoma may have some "better" features than a new 4R doesn't.

    Oh look, another mod....

The Trail Edition Tacoma is just a dressed up SR5. A lot of the other models have push button start (as long as they aren't manuals), and LED headlights. You can add that package to just about any model configuration.

It's the same with our 4runner. Both are based on the SR5 which is why I found it a little odd that there were quite a few differences.
