These two issues are well discussed on this forum so I joined but I do need timely assistance.

The SR5 (108k miles, 1-owner truck) is a recent purchase...a few days ago. No codes, no open recalls. I have requested the status of TSB's for my truck from the dealer but have not received a response yet.

On the 6-hour drive home the cruise system stopped working. I tested it numerous times but it would only enable the cruise system and not set a speed. The icon was always visible in the vehicle information display each time I turned CC on with the switch.

The next morning I drove to fill the tank and the cruise system was fully operational on the outbound and return trip. Can anyone here offer advice or their direct experience with my issue(s)?

The only other observation I have made about the SR5 is the 'Check Charging System' warning message that is displayed when the key is on and the engine is not running. However, this is also discussed thoroughly in this forum and appears to be an expected information message to the driver as a result of these vehicle conditions (i.e., keyed up, engine not operating) causing some vehicle systems to be powered while the alternator is not rotating/charging the battery. Regardless, I am being thorough so the alternator is out and will be bench tested tomorrow morning. I am picking up a new AGM battery today because the existing battery is the original 28800 Toyota battery and is likely to be near end-of-life. The battery terminals and cable ends needed a lot of work to clean but the battery came to full charge when I connected it directly (i.e., cables removed) to one of my battery maintainers. The 28800 load test indicated it is fine for the time being.

i also have a 2016 SR5. The *Check Charging system* message is normal, it's supposed to show that if the key is on and vehicle not running, your vehicle is not broken.
as for CC, i've noticed when i turn off the VSC, Cruise Control will not engage, I figured it's a safety feature. Not sure sure if the VSC applies to your situation or not, just throwing it out there.

Thanks for the reply but maybe I should have also stated this is my first Tacoma. What system is VSC?

Good point...oversight on my part. I did not *knowingly* change the state of any control on the truck when I first noticed CC was not working. My wife and I stopped for a brief break on our return trip and I tried to engage cruise after we merged onto the freeway. No luck...

I was able to obtain the pdf of the FSM (download link shown somewhere in TW) and it indicates I need to remove the switch and the connecting cable and measure the resistance of each. I will be doing this in the next few days as well but my schedule is congested so the tasks may occur in a fragmented manner.
