My 1997 2.7L 4wd would not start this morning. The engine would crank with speed, but would not turn over. Did not suspect a bad battery, but threw jumper cables on just to confirm. Engine still would not turn over.

According to the Haynes manual, when the weather is cold, it is either the battery or fuel not getting to the injectors. Is the due filter the correct place to start?

thanks in advance for the advice.

Have someone listen to the fuel pump while you crank it over. It will run for a second right after trying to crank it and if you put your ear up to the gas tank you will hear the fuel pump making a whirring noise.

Or unbolt the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel rail. (just two 10mm bolts) and see if fuel comes spurting out when you try to start it.

@BigBaby, I should also add that after parking it in the warm(er) garage, it started right up in the morning and started right up on the way home from work. I also changed the fuel pump twice last year. Once after it failed, and a second time about two weeks later due to a dud Delphi pump from Napa.

Strange that it started fine now. Not sure what it could be then. But at least it's starting.

Will probably try a new fuel filter first, then follow that with a new pump. Might have to buy OEM this time.
