Hey y’all, currently having issues tracking down this high fuel trim value. The truck is a 2000 3.4l with a kn Intake. Initially the truck threw a p0171 code which happens when the filter is over oiled and has happened a few times in the past by fouling the maf. This time I cleaned the maf and cleared the cel. The code has not returned however I’m wondering if the kn will make the ecu think it’s running more lean than it is? The short term fuel trim seems to be in the right zone however, the long term fuel trim seems to be much too high. It will also increase with throttle. What should I check? Should I care? New maf? Thanks in advance!

Reset your fuel trims by either disconnecting the battery or removing the EFI fuse for a couple minutes

As long as it’s not over 10% it’s fine.

Doesn’t hurt to check for vacuum leaks.

If it’s stuck over 10% and no leaks it’s likely the maf has had it. Sometimes it can be hard to tell.

I did reset by disconnecting the battery. It looked more correct fir about 15 minutes. The long term is sitting around 10-13 when at idle and increases at higher rpm’s so it’s not the normal 10% variance range. Maf might be done.

It seems to be stuck over 10 and I’ve cleaned the maf 3 or 4 times now from it fouling up so it might be time for a new one.

I have the volant cold air intake.....
.....when I first installed it....I got about +10 on long term at idle....
    and +30 going down highway.....

I was just resolved to that is the just the way it is.....

Six months later in my mad quest to build a new toyota each part at a time....
.....I replaced the egr valve....Intermodel brand.....

Now I get about -4 lft at idle and -8.7 long term at cruising speed....
....what all that means I have no ideal.....but that CAI did mess with ecm...
but everything seems to work okay.....

That good info on the filter.....I tend to over do...
be all right to over clean the filter.......
But.....first I ever heard ......definitely dont over oil it....

I think my maf is off.....it shows way too much cfm at idle.....
.....I ordered another one from mcgoerge and is on its way.....

Awesome thank you all. I was also told to look at the engine load reading at wot and anything less than 100% would point to the maf. Mine was maxed out at 70% with foot to the floor. So I’ll probably try a new maf first. EGR is a good idea too. Thank you!

Yeah I wanted to do that on the new engine.......however after a lot of research....
found out would run engine lean........and hot......and throw a code......so rejected that wild ideal.......
......just have to clean plenum and egr port every 150k ........

How hard is it to clean the egr? Is it doable or do I need to just get a new one?

super simple to clean......not much to it.....

however the two gaskets that connect that egr tube to egr and egr to thottle body were completely cooked...
had to chesil off....they'd turned to concrete.......crispy......

the egr gaskets from autozone and oreily where too small.....bolt to bolt.....only dealer had right size.....
    ......just a complete pia.....whole deal.......jeszh.......
