I have to say the audio system is lackluster, but I have been most frustrated on how to listen to my own music on the system.

I am a bit of a music collector, 4000 records and cds. A lot of obscure stuff and have always liked having and using my cd player in my vehicles. Not an option now. I keep running into roadblocks. I did buy a portable cd player and am using an FM transmitter, but my MP3 player doesnt have the output volume and sounds miserably anemic. My next step was to try a jump drive. But it wont play albums in track order, only in alphabetical order. I looked and looked if there was another way to "sort" the tracks, but had no luck. I tried going into the files on my computer and adding 01, 02, 03 to the song titles and also a, b, c, d...but those didnt work. Still plays alphabetical to the original title (edits dont show up on the head unit display either).

Has anyone been able to overcome this, or am I simply missing something obvious? I searched the forums and didnt find an exact issue with what I am trying to do.

    Thanks in advance!

Use mp3tag to edit the file metadata on your USB drive.

Can confirm, this will fix the issue. Sadly, lots of extra work, but it does the job.

Thanks! It is going to be quite a bit of work. But as a music collector I have manually entered 4k titles into my collection. We are already gluttons for punishment

It will be several weeks before I can ask my next question on here....This is like doing programming....

just watch the mp3 tags. i ran into the same problem and gave up years ago. everything needs to be the same mp3 tag version, otherwise the system still picks/chooses which files go first.

these days, i just select 'random', and go with it.

though if you actually owned all of your music and manually added it to your own computer, you might be better off.. my music collection is a haphazard collection of limewire, piratebay, friends, itunes, amazonmusic, and personally ripped stuff through 4 different software's...

Yeah, I have all of mine ripped directly from the original cds. So that shouldn't be an issue.

Well that failed. I tested it with an old jump drive that could only hold a few albums and it worked. Got a new jump drive from Amazon and it says not recognized (or similar).

UG, it appears from what Im seeing online that you cant convert to fat32 a jump drive bigger than 32gigs? The one im trying to use is 128gig. Am I screwed or am I not understanding something?

It seems silly that toyota would make you jump through this many hoops just to use a jump drive.

You’re screwed with that 128gb usb stick. It does suck. Sadly, it seems to be a Japanese thing.

i was able to get a 128gb ssd set up on an aftermarket pioneer unit. had to do some crazy formatting to make it work. but it really sucked. took close to 5 minutes every time i started the vehicle to load all the music.

i really wouldn't bother going over 32gb. anything more than that, it's better to connect a phone/ipod for other integration options.

Microsoft Windows (and the disk manager that comes with it) cannot create Fat32 partitions greater than 32GB. However, you can use a third party partition manager to create one greater than 32GB. I am not sure if Windows will be able to mount it.

Personally I use an old 5g video iPod, inside of which I swapped out the hard disk with 2 x 64GB SD cards. My Taco' s head unit handles this just fine.

Are you still using iTunes or Rockbox?

I installed an “iFlash” adapter inside the iPod. The model I selected is for two SD cards. I used iTunes to “restore” the iPod stock OS on it. I have a Windows XP installation running on a Linux box inside a Virtual Machine, which is how I load music onto the iPod via iTunes. Works for me.

I am unsure if the Toyota head unit would work / communicate with Rockbox on the iPod.

I picked up an iFlash adapter, but am unsure how far I want to go with my iPod. Now I kind of want to try Rockbox to see if does communicate.

The original hard drive on my 5G (video) iPod bit the dust. At the time, I didn't throw it away / recycle it, but stuffed it into a drawer. I read about the iFlash adapters, and said to myself, "Well, this will solve the 30 GB size issue, and also extend the battery life, since it's now using flash memory instead of spinning a hard drive, and I can make use of the thing.." It was like $40 for the card, and whatever the SD cards cost (or what I had laying around). Reading the Toyota manual on supported devices, I came to this conclusion and said to myself, "I can use this in the truck." It worked (for me) w/o a hitch.

If you have Rockbox on your iPod, no reason not to give it a try and see if / how it works. I would be curious on the outcome. For me, Rockbox on the iPod doesn't offer anything, since it just sits in the console, and the head unit drives it. Rockbox might facilitate my loading stuff onto / off of the iPod, but considering how often I do change that up, it doesn't seem worth the effort for me to try. I guess WITH Rockbox I could probably just use Linux instead of iTunes in the Virtual Machine to do it...
