    OEM replacements are $640 a pair: https://parts.olathetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-cv-axle-left-right-front-4343004071
OEM remans from a Toyota dealer are $194 a pair: https://toyotaparts.bochtoyotasouth...anufactured-shaft-assembly-front-434300407084

I'm running RCVs to avoid carrying a spare for trails, but cost-wise they don't make sense.

    So. Many. Stickers.
They're not fragile. He either had a unique situation or didn't tell us the whole story.

Gotta stop wheel spin. Then again, in 4lo the add should remain engaged so..... :notsure:

    This guy gets it

Yeah, and move the weak link to somewhere more expensive on the drive train.

OEM are far stronger than Napa/O'Reilley's/AutoZone etc.

Those amateurs are dangerous. I wouldn't want them coming within 150 yards of my truck.

    Update:

It’s been a busy weekend. This will be a 2 part update because I’ve been slow with pictures.

First part will be pictures from the recovery and my limited skill at photographing the carnage.

Second part will be what I’ve gotten from the mechanic.

Mechanic finally got eyes on it today and one of the first things he said, was “yup that’s gear oil here” had to pop off the skid to see what was underneath though.

as much as I’ve enjoyed the armchair diagnostics we don’t have a winner today.

The official diagnosis is that I managed to Grenade extension Housing Shaft on the passenger side of the front differential. The Mechanic (who has a great reputation here in SLC in the Toyota-sphere) says he hasn’t seen a failure at that point before.
    His words summarized:
The components inside the front differential are *probably* okay, but the extension housing, the extension housing shaft, and the ADD actuator all need to be replaced in order to rebuild it.

and that’s on top of both CV axles

option 2 was that we found a used compete front diff with no need to rebuild anything with under 12,000 miles. (Coming off a totaled TRD PRO that had damage unrelated to the front differential which is in good shape.) option 2 ends up being slightly cheaper and sounds that it may come with less complications and surprises. Here’s the pictures I received from the shop of the carnage

There's plenty of those truck with low miles that got totaled by insurance that have perfectly good complete front diff assemblies. I'd look into that instead of "cobbling" parts together.

Yes. This was option 2 that we decided on. Ripping off a perfectly good front diff and swapping it in

I have been watching this thread and hoped it was just the CV shafts. Total bummer.

Smart choice with getting a complete used unit and swapping it out.

So besides learning that off-roading can get expensive, what can we all take from this?
