    Here’s a thought:

My 2005 Scion xB manual had a payload capacity of ~900 lbs or a little more (GVWR minus published curb weight)

That was a tiny fwd car with rear drum brakes, and a 103hp 1.5L motor.

How in tarnation do they sell a truck like ours, and only give it 400 pounds more capacity (on paper), than that tiny shoebox I used to drive?

Another way of looking at it: that’s not even 45% more weight capacity for more than twice the cost, in a vehicle literally twice as big (by weight or volume)

where’d I put that :mindblown: emoji...

Now obviously, people aren’t buying midsize trucks for their hauling capacity. But they don’t buy subcompact toasters-with-wheels for their hauling capacity, either...

I wonder how much of it has to do with GVWR and taxes or registration. Maybe they figure it’s more of a “lifestyle” vehicle and don’t want to deter buyers because its payload crosses categories. Seems like most places are 8,000 lbs and less and then 8,001 and up pay different rates. I have no idea if crossing 6,500 or 7k means anything? Either way if you’re in a state like CA you’re screwed. My truck is considered a “commercial vehicle” and supposedly it’s pay load is less than my old Jeep by 150 pounds yet it’s “commercial”.

I have a conspiracy theory that the big three are keeping out foreign fullsize and halfton trucks that could kick the pants off of them. With a little tweaking, either the Tundra or the Tacoma could become direct competitors to what is currently only available domestically.

I like your screenname, btw. My FiL calls me bigAl

Jeez man, of course it was fine in your mind. You seem to struggle with what is certified and legal and what you can actually do. They are two totally different things, and this thread is a confusion of both.
Don't confuse what is certified by Toyota and what you can personally do. However, be warned... this is all about liability not real life.

On another note, the tow rating is too high.

I find it amusing that the GVWR on these trucks is less than on my 95 T100

All trucks in Ca are commercial. You just pay a heftier weight fee the bigger the truck’s GVWR
They also all cause cancer in CA. You cross state lines and they become non-carcinogenic

I just like giving manufactures crap about how vehicles are rated and it just interests me how these numbers are decided. I wouldn’t tell someone else to do it but I’d sure as hell “overload” my truck if I needed to. And yeah, the towing capacity seems a bit optimistic in certain circumstances.

Prop 65 is so stupid. I’m surprised fruit and vegetables don’t have a prop 65 warning on them at the store. It’s all over Starbucks here. Probably the only thing that doesn’t have it is medical marijuana.

Added some things to my truck over this past spring in order to do a month long cross country trip. My quick math landed me at 5600 lbs. I just got weighed at the landfill with 1/2 tank of gas and came in at 6000...thought I was making a lightweight build. It felt great the whole trip but this has me thinking about going bigger.

Interested to hear if anyone has had any issues related to being over GVWR.

My trucks been over gvwr for 300k. 1/3 of the stock leafs broke on both sides after around 275k. That’s it.

I would venture to guess half the overland builds on here are overweight. I would suggest never weighing your vehicle if you are are concerned. Better to plead ignorance if something does happen.
