The argument is about the 3.5L 2GR-FKS which is “allowed” (by Toyota) to run a bunch of different viscosities in one country and only one viscosity is “allowed” in the other country, despite them being the exact same engine. That same engine in one country is able to run 15W-40 per the manufacturer (including the fact that it’s got tighter whatever (clearances, tolerances, insert favorite word here), and VVTI….but that same motor can’t run 15W-40 once it comes to America?

The biggest part of the problem in these discussions is people think 15W-40 is drastically thicker than 0W-20. We’re not comparing honey to water. Even if when both are warmed up, the 40 is twice as thick as the 20, it’s still only twice as thick as something that isn’t thick at all meaning neither of them are thick.

Reminds me of when my company moved offices and the president started complaining (jokingly) about the move tripling his commute. His old commute was 1 mile. 3x 1 mile is still only 3 miles. Lol.

Maybe OP's master tech dad can put it all back to stock without setting the truck on fire.

Toyota USA sells one single version of the Tacoma V6 engine and the oil specs are the same whether it’s sold in Northern Alaska or the Nevada Desert. The climate varies so much, yet people like @Horseshoez will pound their keyboard telling you one single viscosity is correct for a cold start at -40 or 120 degrees.

You just described the Valvoline techs lol. Actual Toyota techs go through a hell of a lot of training and certification.

Honestly sounds like OPs dad..... Was never a Toyota Master Tech.
