Doing the oil & filter change on a 2016 3rd gen Tacoma. After draining the oil at the sump and removing the filter housing to pull the old paper filter, I realized the new replacement filter I purchased was the wrong size. I had no option but to put the old filter back in, then fillup with the fresh oil. Can I pull the filter housing and install a new filter without draining the oil sump? Or will I windup with 5 qts of oil in my face and on the deck?

Yup, you'll lose about 1/4-1/2 qt, it will not drain the system.

What a pain in the ass.

Thanks Bishop. I can handle a 1/2 qt. 5 qts, I'd rather NOT.

    2 tips.

1 - Buy oil filters in bulk. You're 10k miles away form need another one, might as well just buy 3-4. Then when you're down to 1, restock and buy another 3-4 when you're getting oil.

2 - Just leave it and do a full filter/oil change at a 5k interval.

Because of counterfeits? I've always bought mine from Amazon; BUT, I always buy from sellers that are dealerships or reputable parts sellers.
