I’m looking to replace my rear axle seal here soon, found a leak coming from the left side, and thought originally it was my brake cylinder, replaced everything and then proceeded to found out it’s actually gear oil that was everywhere, and my rear axle seal appears to have failed and is leaking gear fluid.

how involved is it to get the axle out to replace the seals?

do I need to take apart the differential or is it just a couple bolts on the wheel mount/housing and comes out like the 4wd models?

Same....only difference is if you have abs....the cup that the seal in is little deeper to accommodate that abs gear sensor....like the ones in video....

Its amazing....but all the ass ends of these are otherwise same.....
......that half axle slides right out....if I can do it.....anybody at moron level or above can do it too.....by watching those smart ass people on those vids......

I would replace that big ass Oring tho.....mine was so crushed.....you couldnt tell it was round originally.....

And you know...with out going in and replacing the inner seal ring and all,,,,,
it may start to leak again in 10K or 20K.......there's been stories.....
    called the 'Mr coffee mod'.....

But we're talking about $300 in specialty tools to get that ring and bearing seperated from axle...
probably not do able by u.......and I trust few to do this right.......avg mech may flock it up..leakin again at 20K......

I replaced this seal in my driveway on my 03 2WD a couple of years ago. I agree with the previous post in that if you can watch you tube vids and use a seal puller you can totally do this. Worst case scenario is if you mess it up you could still always take it to a shop though that would be difficult when disassembled.

once you realize just how easy it is, you’ll never pay another shop to do this job again. Go for it., no guts no glory.

I think it's important to note, that pulling the axle requires disconnecting the brake line, and subsequently bleeding the brakes once everything is reassembled. Not that it's hard, but just something to consider.
