I went with a Millercat for protecting my cats. I figured that it looks like enough of a PITA for a thief that it may dissuade them enough to just go for another car.

I do have the coupon code "ROBSAUTOS" if anyone else wanted one.

Wait for real? An aftermarket CC can't pass emissions? I got it done through an autoshop that Geico sent me to. I would expect that is something they would have mentioned. I'm in Illinois if that matters.

California Air Resources Board (CARB) requires OEM catalytic converters to pass their SMOG (Emissions tests/inspection) unless the aftermarket replacement has an EO (Executive Order).
    https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/aftermarket-catalytic-converters

I'd crawl under and look at your specific cats, take some photos and look them up to see if they have CARB EO numbers.

Other states may be as strict.

I got my insurance cost from my carrier. I use Geico for my bikes, saved over 800.00 per year quoted so I switched. Did not know if was the Cat issue or not. Gonna look into switching all our vehicles. Insurance was comparable in coverage.

Someone buying a used vehicle should do their due-diligence and get an inspection. You aren’t going to lose resale value unless you specifically advertise you have used aftermarket parts. Used vehicles are often repaired and sold as cheaply as possible by the existing owners. You don’t need to lie if asked, but that also wouldn’t something anyone would typically mention when selling a used vehicle .

I bought the RCI cat guards just to stay consistent with my other skids that I already have from them but now I see they are pretty generic for several Toyotas and require drilling holes. Kind of annoyed with that.

    I have a Cat Security on a 2nd Gen.

I specifically tested for this after I installed, and no rattle. No overheating issues in South Texas summer. Had mine for a year now, and zero issues and plenty of piece of mind

I have yet to see a post on where one of these has been circumvented or removed by a thief, I am not saying it can't be done, but these are definitely a deterrent.

I haven't opened the box on mine yet. I hope that's not the case when I also bought their full skid package.

How would they know? I’m in CO and need to replace mine. They definitely do not inspect the cat, you just can’t buy a non-carb one in the state.

I bought the Cali Raised LED Cat covers and rattle canned a few coats of an auto rust pain on them today and will be installing them after work.
It's cheap insurance and peace of mind.

We've had two separate operations of cat thieves in our Culver City neighborhood in the last couple of years and they usually hit around 8 am just when all the other construction was starting so the sawing didn't stand out like it might have at four in the morning. Mostly hitting Tacomas but Prius's too. At least one of the rings was caught but I don't know about the other one. I put Cali-Raised on mine as a deterrent.

As far as aftermarket cats go here in California, you can't even buy one that has not been approved by the state and no one will ship you a non approved cat from out of state. Found that out about 20 years ago when the cat was stolen from my previous Toyota truck. The cheap aftermarket ones might save you money in the short term but they really do not last as long and clog up within a year or two where the OEM was still going strong after fourteen years and who knows how long it would have gone.

For those who have had theirs stolen, you should be able to insist on factory OEM from your insurance company, after all, you are paying them to make the vehicle whole again and it will not be the same with an aftermarket converter.
