Meters have really come down in cost over the years, around $100 gets you a really nice unit, around $50 a very serviceable one.

At the way back job I carried a tiny Radio Shack pocket meter, and a test light. Carrying a full size meter all day wasn't practical.

Naturally they weren't for big job use but for a service call it saved thousands of trips hiking clear across the plant just so you could check a fuse. These little meters were amazingly tough and reliable.

    iegfbhtmfh1z.jpg

The test lights I carried were similar but had 4 neon bulbs to indicate 120, 240, 277 & 480.
They were inexpensive and a drop would break the bulbs, by pumping the body full of hot glue they would survive a 10 foot drop.

That is how the Presto Hot Dogger worked: hot on one side, neutral on the other, hot dog in the middle. Yep, that is how we did things back then folks.

I think perhaps its on how you use it. If its used on the side of a suspected hot wire the light illuminates and you get that audible beep. When I've used them in the past, I always do the shirt test. Static buildup as you rub it on your shirt sleeve is enough to tell you that the tool works. Once I know that, I check a known hot wire then check my suspect wire then go back to my known hot to reconfirm. I wouldn't under any circumstances just go straight to the unknown and trust that it's working. Call it paranoid but I like to err on the side of caution. Of course, check the tool and confirm the voltage rating on those things but they are relatively sensitive enough to give you a reading without physically touching the wire. In wire bundles, make sure to separate the wires enough to isolate the suspect wire but again, I err on the side of caution for bundled wires as well. All wires in a bundle need to be safed before I do any work. Confirm, check known, check unknown, check known and Bob's your uncle.

Try moving it quickly back and forth on your jeans, it will probably light up, just can't trust them.

The red pin is where the building is going. The airport should be pretty self explanatory. :p

I was wrong… by a mile… Alternator tester wasn’t my guess… but I guess it was the ballpark. I rebuilt (or had rebuilt) quite a number of dynamos and alternators over the years. Those folks are hard to find now… starter rebuilds as well.

I will agree that the shirt test tells one that the tool lights up and makes noise.

Maybe the refused crane was on a direct approach from the picture this one looks far away.

No way to really know unless your involved in the paper work process.

Think of the nightmare around New York City 3 major airports .

My plans for the weekend, add a weatherproof receptacle on the porch and another dedicated circuit to the garage. At least I’ve got 2 breakers in the breaker box that are wired but not being used, hopefully just a cut and splice job. I hate electrical jobs though.
