EDIT: I am wrong, these wheels are not beadlocks, it's a beauty ring that failed. OP did it wrong.

Thats what i am saying. Hydrogen embrittlement will fail a high strength fastener WAY WAY below it's rating.

To be fair, most of the time the fastener is stretched which allows the chemical process to enter the pores of the metal, but it can start at any point of the manufacturing process.

This is more likely then my hydrogen embrittlement theory. helicoils are awesome in applications like this.

I believe on the wheel page they claim the rings are aluminum forged…. Which…
I think is just them throwing words around.

I mean the billet host block may have been forged instead of cast… or instead of mandrel formed. But I just don’t believe they forged the rings.

it’s kind of like when cast wheels started having the hoops spun “forged”… some companies started advertising their wheels as forged.

and some other small wheel makers using cast blanks thrown into cnc machines and calling them machines billet wheels.

I hate the “close one eye, stand on one foot and jump” form of transparency. I’m not saying RRW did this at all to be clear.

just that others have and it keeps me personally in the realm of method as the only cheap offroad wheel I’ll buy.

I agree, there is a play on words for sure but we don't have proof yet. Either way it's a bummer that both of your friends are dealing with this problem. Let us know what rrw says about i!

I remember rrw had 2 versions of their bead lock ring. One was just for aesthetics and the other was the "true bead lock ring". I can't seem to find the "faux bead lock version", but that ring looks like the "faux bead lock" from what I remember unless what they're using is an older design of the real bead lock. Idk

The off-road only is because they are not certified by the DOT. I had 17 in walker evans beadlocks on 35 x 12.50 x 17 Nitto Trail grapplers for 2 years on road and off. Highway, street, and trail with no issue. I just checked the torque on the wheels and the rings regularly. The off-road use only is a liability thing. Trophy trucks run beadlocks, buggies run beadlocks, and plenty of on road/off road guys use beadlocks on their daily drivers.

The pictures show a "protection" ring offered by RRW, used in a beadlock application. I don't have enough experience with these wheels to be sure, but from all the media I've browsed the bead lock ring looks very different from the smooth rings shown here. They may have ordered and installed the wrong rings for the wrong purpose. Never seen or heard of anyone else having this issue, including the people that actually use them as true beadlocks wheelin'.

edit: this is an example of their beadlock ring.

Yeah, their website states the protection rings are for off road use only. :notsure:

So those are not true beadlocks, those are what RRW calls protection rings and they protect when off roading from rocks and such. I have these same protection rings. The beadlocks are in the image in post #28. They are a hybrid rim and RRW does offer the aluminum true bead lock. We’re you running these as a bead lock though? If so, that is what happened and in the pic it looks like they are set on the rim for a bead lock. This would explain the low tire pressure too.

Yeah these guys used the protection ring as a beadlock and it isn't surprising that it failed miserably. Funny part is one of them does nuclear work and is supposedly "patient and exacting" in all applications of everything. Small oversight but you'd think nuke kids would know better.

Correct. These are NOT beadlock wheels. They have "beadlock style bolts... for an aggressive look"

    This thread got quiet!
Curious to what you did after receiving the info.
Also, did you use washers with your bolts and did they come with them? My protection rings didn’t. Are those the bolts that came with the rings?

EDIT: just realized this original post was from last year. Haha
