The weapon laws are always moving around. The current regime will be working to shift the laws.

Suggest you become familiar with the laws and regulations in your State.
    Try different weapons and calibers.
    Practice.
    Practice.
    Practice.

    Then practice some more.

Practice to the point where you don't need to think, it becomes automatic. If you get into a situation, there will be little time to think.

You don't wanna be like Flounder in Animal House trying to shoot the horse in the Dean's office.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
Asking what gun to buy is like asking which car or truck to buy. 50 people will give you 50 different answers (well, maybe not on a Tacoma forum - LOL) and none of them are guaranteed to satisfy your wants and needs.

I recommend taking the advice of the people who have said to go to a range that rents pistols and shoot as many as you can until you find the one that really feels good to you.

Glock 19s are the favorite pistols of woodworkers, due to the ergonomics of a 2x4.

Don't buy on looks. Got to the store and put your hands on all of them. Make sure that they fit your hand. Use the range to try out any that you are interested in as you will get a feel for it and how it will react when fired. The gun you think fits great in your hand and is perfect when you were at the case and then when you actual fire it, you have to constantly readjust your grip because it is moving all over the place and feels like it is gonna fall out of your grip.
