Ok I'm new with Toyota's but have spent most of my life fixing cars and trucks for myself and are kids.
My new Tacoma since mile 5 when I got it make a tic tic sound while running at an idle
kind of like a lifter tic or like my old 06 mustang gt 4.6 tic with that timing chain problem the 4.6l have.
I am at 400+ miles so is this a break-in thing or take it back to the dealer thing or is this a common thing?
I can say it is related to rpm's as you increase the rpm so does the tic tic till the engine drowns out the noise
So being new should there not be any TIC TIC noise ??

I talked the the dealer about the navigation and map button if you want these features you have to buy the Tacoma Pro or have your tacoma custom built.
As it is, I can only install toyota-alexa nothing else will install in the app section on the radio
the dealer told me it is there new safety feature?? You have to use your phone.
so digging into it, to use toyota nav apps and all that, you have to pay a subscription fee now.

Ticking is normal. Combo of the VVT, direct injection.

This is common with the 2GR V6. A certain amount of valve train noise is common, but it might be worth having the dealer investigate further to make sure there isn’t some manufacturing defect causing a louder-than-normal ticking noise.

    a video would help.

are you sure it's not the direct injection 'feature'? these new vehicles all sound like old diesels sometimes these days.

Welcome to the forum :hattip:Congratulations on the the new truck.

The Tacoma is both the most expensive and loudest engine I have ever owned, including the $100 wonders of my youth.

That said it probably is normal, it wouldn't hurt to have the dealer service department have a quick listen to confirm it though.

Congrats on your 2023 sewing machine.

The 3.5 is a noisy engine. Probably normal.

    Oh look, another mod....
You have the new "Sewing Edition" Tacoma. Congrats. Actually, we all have it. You'll get used to it and learn to ignore it.

Well like I said my First new tacoma so ? a tic tic is new to me but I have a few SBC and ford engines in the past so to me it sounds like a lifter not adjusted right but that is the sound tic tic tic. Oh the days of engine Muscle Power!!
This is not my daily driver to work and back, I am saving this for retirement and going fishing I did get the added 7 year 75k extended warranty.
Getting to old to have to pull engines apart to fix them so I was you all here would not try to blow smoke up my behind

    Thank You For Your Help

Most likely normal as these engines are definitely on the noisier side.

I have a 2017 Tacoma Sport with the same engine and Ya.. they tick. The high pressure fuel pump loves to make sure you know it exists and as others have stated above a lot of other technologies included in the engine add to the Symphony. I always assumed Ticking was bad. Now I've learned at least with this engine its actually quite normal.

Normal. Noisiest V6 I've ever owned. I came from a 2003 Pathfinder that I owned for 14 years. Now that 3.5-liter VQ35DE DOHC 24-valve V6 was very smooth and quiet. On a few occasions I mistakenly went to re-start it when it was already running. It was that quiet.

My wife loves the sound of our Tacoma as it sounds like a real truck. "Almost like a little diesel" she says.

Good news is you should not have to worry about carbon build-up thanks to the D4-S system. https://www.wardsauto.com/technology/toyota-advances-d4s-self-cleaning-feature-tacoma

Lots of info here if you are new to the Tacoma.

I was just wondering the same thing about the navigation. I purchased a 2023 TRD OR last week.

Mods, can we sticky something on this? I think it's warranted as to how much it scares new 3rd gen owners.

It's the direct injection pump. The GDI technology gives us some decent power and emissions improvements but the downside is noise, go listen to an N20 or N26 BMW engine they sound like they're going to launch any second.

    few things here and there.
Absolutely a normal characteristic of Tacomas. 2nd gen, 3rd gen especially.

A little bit of this, and a little bit of that.
From my understanding, the tic tic tic is the injectors self cleaning themselves. Super annoying, since I thought it was lifter tick at first, but the injectors go into “self cleaning mode” to clear out/prevent carbon buildup which is what the tic tic tic is from my understanding.

Ok good to know. I just drove off the lot with a 2023 TRD sport. Old truck was an 05’ taco. First year of the new gen so head gasket issues! Ha. But that’s for another forum.
Ok good to know the sewing machine is normal. That’s exactly what it sounds like. I was a bit worried. And I have good ears so I can pick up on small things. So glad this is normal

So damn annoying, mine started making that noise at idle around 30k miles. Toyota Master tech said its the fuel pump, and it’s normal.
