Hey all, I'm in search of a topper but having a hard time finding a gen1 version. Is there a difference between gen1's and gen2's? Seems like gen2's are easy to come by near me, was wondering if there's a difference?

I had the ARE DCU commercial topper on mine. It was wider at the back of the bed, closer to the cab. Stuck out about an inch on both sides. The length and height were fine.

I, regrettably, ended up selling it. I did get $100 more than what I paid for it.

I have an ARE that I put on when the truck was brand new. It’s been pretty good but scuffed my tailgate at the top owing to friction between the topper and tailgate. Now that it’s 20 years old the clear coat is peeling, which sucks because the truck is otherwise so good looking, but it’s just cosmetic. I would say they are good toppers if you can still find them. I don’t know if there were differences between the ones that fit 1st and 2nd gen however.

@Shrimp Taco Yes, they are different. The general dimensions are the same, so that a commercial shell like the ARE DCU would fit ok, the fiberglass ones will not.

The 2nd gen bed tapers from the front to back. The width at the front of the bed is sider and the rear is slightly narrower than the 1st gen, which has a rectangular bed.

Also, keep in mind - there are 3 versions of the shell for the 1st gen:
    * Regular cab - the front of the shell is vertical to match the cab profile
    * Xtracab - the front of the shell is slanted forward to match the cab profile (WILL NOT WORK ON A REGULAR CAB)
    * Double cab - fits the 5'1" bed only.

@JasonLee Thank you for the info. I've found a couple toppers that the owner claims were on a tacoma, but they are unsure of any differences in years. Do you know if any other small trucks toppers will fit? Colorados, rangers, etc? I'm wanting a glass topper. I can't believe how hard they are to find. Thanks

Others will “fit” but will leave gaps or not match the body.

If your goal is to just find something to cover the bed, I would go explore some of the other options and be ready to stuff some filler material in the gaps.

Also, unless the person has a Tacoma and it came off their truck, don’t believe them. Some junk yards and even used topper places claim Tacoma, but it was a ranger, etc. I would have the top placed onto your truck to confirm figment before you end up paying in full.
