I am in stalling an ARB snorkel and have two questions:

    1. The airbox has some holes in it, perhaps to drain water. Should I plug them, tape them over, epoxy, gorilla glue??

    IMG_1107.jpg

    2. The connecting hoses are a very tight fit onto the snorkel body. Any advice on how to fit them? Was planning to hit the ends with an airgun (or whatever that shop "hair dryer" is called), but wonder what others think.

No, do not plug your airbox holes. If water gets in there, that is how it gets out.

As for the rubber tube, maybe soak it in hot water for several minutes. See if that helps.

Yeah don't plug those airbox holes.

I remember the connecting hoses being a pain in the ass, i want to say I may have sprayed a little silicone grease to help it along but can't say for sure. It will fit though

I used soapy water in a spray bottle to get the connection together.
I recently drove in heavy rain and I’m fairly certain those little drain holes let out a lot of water that got in the snorkel. There were definitely water spots inside the intake tube (before the filter)

Thanks to all your comments. So if I do a river crossing, those little holes will not be a problem? I expect the vacuum will mostly suck in air through the path of least resistance, so I will leave those holes unplugged, but was just wondering.

Common misconception... that snorkel doesn't make your rig the Nautilus. If water gets up that high (to the airbox), you have more than your engine locking to worry about. At that point, its in your cabin. Besides, where the air box connects to the right angle tube that leads to the snorkel, that is by no means air tight. Hell, the factory has a skimpy piece of foam around it. You'll be good.

Main benefit IMO to having the snorkel, cleaner and more air flow.

Have fun... love what you've done with the rig.

^ this is very true. The main reason I got a snorkel was that after removing my fender liners the stock intake acted like a scoop and sucked in a lot more dirt and debris that was flung up by the tire.

One unexpected bonus from the snorkel is that I gained an average of 1.2 mpg when traveling at highway speeds.

@koenbro - If you really want to seal up that right angle going from the wheelwell into the airbox, I thought about wrapping them where the two join with fusion tape. Should seal it pretty good. Definitely better than just plugging it in with that foam strip from the factory. Something like this - I keep a roll of this handy in the onboard toolkit

Have installed the thing, photos will follow soon.

Question: Should I point the snorkel intake forward, or back? I have seen (on Youtube and in person) people in Africa point it back, and was wondering if there is some reason for the orientation.

Forward. Even in the heaviest rain we've had in NorCal since I installed it (how many years now?), nothing bad has happened.
you could always swap in this if still concerned

Had an extra tube of silicon grease so used it up for the connections.

Still need to reattach the liner and the trim piece.

There are of course others of similar style. Definitely shop around. Install looks clean, nice work. Cheers!

Thank you for the comment -- your point is worth repeating, that the snorkel is not (as much) for water as it is for cleaner, cooler air from a higher level.

ARB specifically says to only point it backward in heavy snow, where it might build up in the head and block airflow. Otherwise it performs better facing forward in all other conditions

A lot of guys will say forward. They are wrong, but that's o.k.

I would not be scared to follow manufacturer instructions though.

    ^^^^^^^^

This is actually the correct way to go. What we used on the farm for the tractors an combines.

The thing he linked, not his advise on positioning.
